I suggest you call gunsmith Buck Hamilin (636/479-4304). Buck is an expert on Twist and Damascus barrels, and a man you can trust. Buck has conducted many independent strength tests in an effort to make these type barrels blow and can provide details and answer all your questions; but the bottom line is that Smith Twist and Damascus barrels are quality and incredibly strong. I've shot thousands of rounds thru my Twist and Damascus guns and never had a problem. With Smith guns that came standard with 2 3/4" chambers, I typically hand load standard length shells and keep pressures under 8000 PSI; but there are loading manuals available that provide a wide array of hand-load recipes with much lower pressures and good velocities. Bottom line, enjoy your gun with proper loads and don't listen to the nay-sayers. If you plan to shoot this gun regularly, remember that your wood is 100 years old and is brittle from age; so have someone like Buck glass and reinforce the stock head to avoid any damage. Good Shooting
