I think this matter may indeed be muddy, as you say, when all is said and done.
I suspect that the Hunters, like others, were also willing to "extend" the newness of their offerings, resulting in things being "new" for more than one advertisement (and even one year). Without the records having barrel steel information, this matter may be hard to verify.
Still looking for information from that 1895 catalog, though.
