I seldom do gunsmith recommendations nowadays because, as my sainted grandmother used to say; "a burnt child won't play with fire". Several years ago I was asked for an engraver recommendation by a gentlemen who wished to have the engraving on his Crown Grade barrels chased out, so I gave the name and contract information of an engraver who had never done any work for me but was highly recommended by some of our members. Some weeks later this same gentleman, now angry and totally frustrated, called me and chewed me out one end to the other! Seems my recommended engraver had "ruined his barrels". What does one do in a situation such as that other than extend sincere but totally useless apologies? The offending engraver is now deceased, but the result of this sad experience is that I don't make recommendations.
