Re: Type I and Type II hammers
The manufacturing information about the Quality E hammer gun in Buck Hamlin's article in the Journal did not come from an LCSCA research letter. I suppose that it is possible that it came from a early letter by Lt. Col. Brophy. Brophy said in his book L.C. Smith Shotguns that serial numbers 27766 to 29999 were finished in 1895. Houchins in L.C. Smith: The Legend Lives said that serial numbers 22501 to 29999 were finished from 1892 to 1894. I do not know the source of that information because those shotguns are not in our records. I looked for those records in the Cody Firearms Museum when I was gathering information for Johns book and found nothing. We determined that the LCSCA records and those on loan to the Cody Firearms Museum from the Marlin Firearms Company are identical. I asked John about those records a couple of times, but he never responded. "The Legend Lives", as well as "The Mystery Lives" concerning the early production records.
