I pretty much agree with all the above posters however I store my guns muzzle up. I don't use oil but use synthetic grease which does not seem to run. Fifteen years of storage with no apparent oil migration unless i bought it that way.
It seems to me as oil softens the head against the receiver or crazy hot loads cause compression and shortening of the stock allowing the sidelocks to push against the wood at the rear of the opening. They are shaped like a wedge after all and cause the splitting we often see.
