A well respected gunsmith advised me as follows: when you are handling the gun for any purpose except shooting hold the opening lever as the gun is closed but never do that when you are shooting. When shooting always let the top lever snap back to ensure that you have a tightly closed gun. He went to say many loose rib extensions are probably caused by inadequate gun closures and shooting with loose top lever springs.
