I didn't even boil the water & the ends of my doll's hair fried. I wouldn't use hairspray or gel or the stuff the doll came with- you don't know what it will do to plastic hair. I've used aloe vera gel. It will sorta flake off though. To set it I used pieces of aluminum foil on the ends of the hair(cut wider than the clump of hair), rolled it around a skewer (used for shish-ka-bob)& folded the foil over the curl while removing the skewer. I set one with warm tap water, left her for 2 days, didn't even comb it afterwards, & it's straight again. Just giving you my experience.
