It was the same for Mark Strong and Katie B's interpretation - they missed out on the 'being friend' bit - in the book the wonderful thing is that Knightley and Emma are friends as well as intellectual and social equals; in fact I can't think of another book pre-20th century that has male and female characters talking to each like that (except perhaps Beatrice and Benedick in Much Ado)and it is what I like so much about the book.
