I think this author likes to use the word 'nebbish'. The author also calls Bill Nighy nebbish, and I don't think either JN or Bill Nighy seem timid or meek. Hugh Grant has played that sort of a type, but not the other two.

I'm not familiar with Matthew Beard either. It looks like he's nominated for a Tony award...good for him!
