My mind might be playing tricks here, but I seem to remember a lof of chuckling around the time of their takeover about how Everton had provided a perfect example of how not to run a club in the PSR era.

Quite amusing* to see how they've fucked up that initial spend so badly that they have effectively hamstrung themselves from pushing on.

*Lessened by the knowledge of who this mechanism is intended to benefit.

Got it all together and I'm ready to seethe.

It's why Staveley got the bullet. Too much too soon in qualifying for CL in the first full season must've led to them getting all giddy, and carrying on spending like that 1960's pools winner. I can't really knock any of the buys in the first 18 months or so, though getting rid of Anderson to comply with PSR was a huge mistake.

I think we've stalled through a combination of being unable to raise anything significant from sales (which would hugely benefit PSR) because a) we're crap at selling and b) we don't have the bodies available to sell because of the demand of CL.

The cluster fcuk behind the scenes has not helped, as we moved toward the shark as a CEO and DoF business model. We also appear to have lost the magic black book of quality transfer targets playing in Europe, available for decent wedge, and have instead reverted to the Chuckle Brothers watching MOTD re-runs, picking out oven-ready, glaringly obvious PL players, who shouldn't even be approached as targets, for very obvious reasons.

I still think we've done remarkabkly well though, as there's only so far you can get with PSR pocket money after starting with a relegation squad. However, we're now also in the labyrinth of UEFA FFP, which has a whole other different set of rules, which led to Chelsea and Villa being fined and hamstringing us left, right and centre. Villa now can't spend more on players this window than they sell, whilst Chelsea were able to play in the CWC enabling them to pay off the fine and trouser £70mill extra.

It's almost as if it's designed to be impossible to bridge the gap, and with no team outside the snide six having managed to qualify for CL in consecutive seasons, it's probably not far wrong. Villa had the luxury of the £100m sale of Grealish to kick start them, and have also made £125m from Duran and Diaby to Saudi, yet are still struggling to comply. I'm amazed we haven't just said fcuk it and thought let's be hung for a sheep as a lamb and just go for it. I'm sure we could tie them up in court for 15 years, though B&Q have got plastic sheeting on sale, which would certainly be quicker.

Cheers chief 👌🏻 Considering it's only 5 minutes ago that we had Mrs Doubtfire in charge of a full on relegation drive, with an utterly abject team, it's nuts what has happened really.

Funny how it's all died down now re: PSR, tho maybe everyone has their house in order. I wonder what the next cartel version of PSR will look like.

Even the ultra capitalist Yanks knew that competition was a key element in making the NFL successful, but their cartel is all 32 teams. The EPL cartel is 6, with a host of clubs that'll say yes to anything they say, just to maintain the league. I hope someone breaks it, as finishing 5th and occasionally winning a league cup shouldn't be the limits for all other 14 teams.

growth isnt possible anymore - look at newcastle and villa. theyve got a lot right, but because they didnt get EVERYTHING right, they risk slipping back.

that doesnt seem to be the case for the 6, who can be mediocre for a while, make a load of bad signings and then still come roaring back by spending more money.

because the clubs are all in direct competition with each other and dont operate in a vacuum, any potential for growth is throttled by other clubs who already have the financial muscle.

take utd - no way should they have been able to spent 10 billion quid on strikers this summer.

spurs have always had an edge over say everton due to being in london, even when the clubs were comparable.

but ultimately, it comes back to where clubs were at when psr came in - or more specifically the 10 years previous where the 6 clubs built their profile, built their squads and expanded their business. this gives the 6 clubs a level of robustness that other clubs cant get to.

we are now in a situation where its not a fair competition. clubs that have spent 20 years building a business then stopped anyone else following suit.

if newcastle or villa could have spent year on year the way that certain other teams have then things might look different.

even everton who had a 3 year period of overspending on crap players in the early moshiri years.

isnt that what man utd have just done?

yet the rules mean that we got points docked and they spend a fortune and go again.

there absolutely should be some spending rules in place - it would be ridiculous otherwise.

but it should be the same for everyone, or its obvious that clubs that are allowed to spend will spend more money on better players, win trophies, get more income, spend more money on better players......

the league are happy for this - in front of the parliamentary enquiry(?) masters said "big clubs bring in tv money and need looking after (or words to that effect)". he seems to have missed the point that any club that does well in the premier league will bring in the money and gain more fans if allowed to do so over a period of time.

this is the first generation where a set number of teams are allowed to be competitive.

everton only plead guilty to the charges once it became clear that the commission wasnt going to accept the mitigations.

i.e. cost of building a stadium in the inflationary period immediately following the outbreak of the ukraine war.

the cost of stadium finance subsequent to losing hundreds of millions of pounds of investment due to the same war. this equates to about 50m a year that we have to account for in psr. or did until TFG refinanced.

(these two were the same for everyone according to the commission. i could only see one stadium being built with russian investment).

paying gylfis wages up when he was suspended. we lost the player when we could have done with him and couldnt then spend his wages on a replacement.

(a business decision according to the commission).

balance this against utd claiming 40m quid for ratcliffe buying some shares and tell me we broke the rules.

the rules are what the league and then the commission (appointed by the league) choses to interpret - they are very vague. we got the hanging judge.

forest went bust by more having spent on players (we didnt) and got a lesser fine.

now we are a couple of years behind forest as they are in europe and happily spending money.

we were fucked over pure and simple.

the rules are a joke anyway. no inflationary clasue meant that eventually every club will end up breaching. unless of course the league decides you are a cash cow and doesnt refer you to a commission (utd again, and chelsea selling hotels)

saw a comment on line about everton cheating again by selling the womens team to create headroom.

Also, I can't comment on Villa's losses but a large proportion of Everton's losses will have been on the building costs of a new stadium. That's called investment, your own club did the same not so long ago.

Being in the champions league regularly, means you have a far bigger income so can spend more money.

Which means you can continually stay there. (a few years of being outside and you will be in trouble, but it's harder and harder for other people to permanently dislodge you on the back of one bad season)

Also the teams who are cementing their place are the teams who were spending more freely before the rules came in. If everyone started from the same place then you could argue PSR would be alright, but Man U and Liverpool had spent millions for seasons and seasons. Everton got one crack at it (fucked it up completely) but couldn't reset and have another go in the way Liverpool did.

OK lets take the possibility that Spurs may be about to outbid us for that Southampton lad.

Everton are baulking at the asking price because our PSR threshold is low and we have other areas to fill too.

Spurs may well be able to go in for him because their PSR threshold is higher and they don't have as many holes to fill.

Now if Spur's owners had more actual money to invest than Everton's then all's fair enough, that's capitalism for yer....but if Everton's owners were as brewstered as Newcastle's then it would be a false advantage given to Spurs over Everton by PSR.

I'm not arguing they aren't.....just at the idea that PSR is somehow there to ensure clubs are 'sustainable'.

Even the three year rolling model its based on is bullshit. All businesses invest from time to time in order to move from one level up to another, some of it cna be done over a short period, but some larger projects take 5 years plus to build into the model. So you are restraining multi-million pound businesses with ambitious owners to achieving those ambitions over three years in a very risky environment when a five or even ten year model would be better.

Leicester, won the EPL (at the expense of Spurs), got into the CL actually as Champions, rather than fifth place finishers like some others I should mention.

Had all their best players poached from them, now in the Championship AND fucked over by PSR.

I think yours and Villa's experience is quite depressing proof that even if Everton were to get their act together and qualify for the Champions League, it's not the entry into the land of milk and honey we think it would be.

For all the extra money, you have to spend most of it to be competitive enough to have any chance of getting back in it the following year and if you fail then you are hamstrung by all those big contracts for the next four or five years.

I guess Forest are on a similar path now, without CL qualification, next season and the season after will see them struggling with the financial realities.

Look at Leicester's case too.

At least you used the upward curve to get that trophy winning monkey off your back though, we did feck all with our cash bonus last time around and probably won't again.

Pretty much sums it up.

The 'no club qualifying twice in succession' stat is quite damning. Even though it's nearly happened, balancing the demands of the increased squad size needed against PSR constraints and UEFA FFP wage ratios mean that even if one of us did stumble over the line twice, there would need to be player sales to generate the millions needed to satisfy that year's PSR requirements and UEFA wage restrictions.

When you have a buffer of £250mill revenue every year over 14 clubs, because your commercial side is so well developed through consistent exposure in CL, those juggling acts aren't necessary. You can throw 50 or 60 million at a player, and not even worry if they're a success.

In order to break through, you'd have to be the perfect mix of Brighton/Bournemouth money ball, combined with an aggressive revenue expansion. Even then it seems unlikely.

Europe and they've sold more than us - we've spent about £80m and recouped either nothing (or £4m depending on when you include the Maupay fee).

Forest have sold Elanga and and Danilo for at least £80m

In truth they are nowhere near the level of fuck up that we were. They've largely bought and sold well. Just not as much as they would like to have done which is amusing given their initial expectations.

Winning a cup and qualifying for CL is still moving forward though. Plus Ramsey and Elanga aren't bad signings

True, but without PSR they'd be signing a much higher quality of player.
