Seagulls

What's going on with these things? Loads of them by me making a massive racket the whole time. Sitting on chimneys and kicking off when you go out your door.

Is it mating season or are they just kopites in bird form?

I was walking through Williamson sq in town last week, and a gull was devouring a pigeon( which I presume it had just killed)
Horrific scenes.

Their young are falling from nests aots around this time or 1st flight fk ups. Their parents are vigilant as hell protecting them from anything, so one could be closeby. They usually need a decent run to take off again, I shoo them out of my yard into the larger alley now and again. Advice is leave alone, don't feed, parents will take care of em.

The ones on the Pier Head are maniacs. Regularly scoop and steal food out of people's hands, happened to me twice and I'd watch it all the time when I used to work down there. Funny scenes like.

But when the cotton on that a load of Everton fans are sneaking their own sausage rolls into BMD, they'll gather an army of ridiculous proportions. No man's butty, chips or toupee will be safe

I was up in St Andrews last week and visited the Cheesy Toast Shack on the East Sands Beach for lunch (Red Leicester, Chorizo, Rocket and Chilli jam. Sensational). They were offering 'seagull insurance' for an extra £1, though I declined. Obviously a problem there too.

In fairness, the insurance part of the cost is given to a local charity, but it was already £7.99 for the toastie, so i think that's plenty.

their numbers in urban areas are increasing massively, same for lots of other scavenging pests like rats, mice and urban foxes.

Local Authorities have scaled back on refuse collection over the last decade, most are lucky if you get a general waste collection every 2 weeks rather than the traditional weekly delivery and even then these days the actual collecting is not very good because like almost anything they have cut back on the actual service. Your Bin isnt exactly outside your gate? not getting collected, a bag breaks and refuse spills out everywhere? cursory cleaning up probably leaving food for them everywhere, the town centre/local high street that used to have a dedicated street cleaner? he has 3 areas now and he will be round once a week so all the bins are overspilling and the litter/waste food is there for 3 days instead of a couple of hours.

That leaves an abundance of food all over the place hence the increase in this type of pest.

Also local Authorities pest control departments, there was an article the other day saying that about 40% of London councils will no longer provide pest control for privately owned residences. Imagine what will happen.

Its another of those unintended consequences of 15 years of "Austerity" that no one thought about.

I work in the Plaza on Old Hall St and once a month a fella turns up with a bird of prey and walks around the roof of the building opposite, it's blindfolded and just sits on his arm but they are obviously telling the local bird population to steer clear as it's his terrority!

The unintended consequences are starting to show up all over the place now, I live in Croydon one of those LA's who are effectively bankrupt and they are starting to show up in different ways.

Last year they scaled back on cutting grass all over the borough they sold it as "rewilding" but the truth is they just didnt have the money.
Auto accidents went up because the verges and roundabouts were overgrown and stopping people seeing traffic coming.

The hoo hah at the moment is the rise of anti-social behaviour in teenagers and young adults, the budget for Youth services is not existent, who would have thought that closing all the youth clubs, Local Authority owned amenities and not maintaining the sports pitches would result in a load of youths hanging around with nothing to do might add up to something.

Local Authority claims for damage to vehicles and claims by people who are getting injured on the roads and pavements are through the roof because they are not fixing the issues because they don't have the money.

Parents are taking the LA to court regarding SEND legal commitments not being fulfilled by the schools, and they are having to pay a fortune to try and defend themselves in court and still getting hit by fines and instructed to make things better.

They have had a special government approved council tax rise of 10% and put the council tax up by the maximum legal limit without a referendum for the last 5 years and the services are still getting worse and worse

The secondary issues are all starting to kick in and the chances are that solving the problems will end up costing more than was saved in the first place. And now they still don't have the money to fix them.

Its a fucking Disgrace.

It's just a blanket term covering all the different varieties. These are Common Gulls, I believe.

They're just gulls of various types though I live less than a mile from the coast.

Someone once told me that birds don't know what they're called and just go wherever the scran is, which is very true.

These things are becoming a real nuisance. Really noisy and aggressive. I waved the clothes prop at one the other week and it was circling me and cackling away. The kopite.

There were a few seagulls splattered all over the road because they'd been stood there in the road feasting on the ants.

I had them nesting on my roof and every time I came home, and I tried numerous different ways, the little get would swoop at me causing me to go full benny hill
