Get what you're saying, but I watched it anyway. Not because I cared about the competition. Only the 2nd game I've watched (first being PSG/Madrid semi). More about the intrigue of watching a potentially great PSG side against a Chelsea side that should be challenging at that level given the fortunes they spend. The fact that tit Trump was shown occasionally didn't arse me at all other than mild amusement that he's like a fly around shit where a publicity stunt beckons.

It's too easy to overthink these things and choose to make individual statements about a personal disregard for it (not saying necessarily that's your take) so I watched the game for what it was and enjoyed it.

Am I contributing to the Americanisation of our game ? probably in a very small way yes. But it's a juggernaut unfortunately and I don't feel inclined to switch off just because there's minor aspects of the spectacle that I find a bit irritating and which aren't actually affecting my reason for tuning in.

Everyone who has a ST at Everton (or any PL side) or even a membership is contributing to the gradual change in the way the game is put out, no difference to last night other than the scale of the event. We are all being dragged along and it's a case of carry on or ship out. Everyone has that choice.

Not trying to judge anyone on what approach they take, but if you are intent on following your team and or the game in general, you do it warts and all or not at all. Trump may as well not have been there last night whatsoever, he was a shoulder shrug for me while I waited for the game to unfold. Didn't watch any of the post match stuff where I believe he was gegging in on the celebrations. Meh!

It was a good game and personally glad I watched.

It was on Channel 5 last night - if it was just on DAZN I wouldn't have bothered.

It's the only game I watched in the entire competition (and it was a decent game to be fair). It is a horrible competition in general, obviously...

I was thinking of posting something similar. We’ve allowed football to do this to us really. It’s like the kit thing in another thread, we’ve got to the point now where we get three brand new kits each season that cost about 150 quid each. And now people are buying cheap knock offs from china. This stuff is utterly mental. People have even been priced out of watching games legally on tv and resort to illegal streams which no doubt fuel all manner of organised crime gangs.

It’s easily the most rancid sport out there. And it’s just getting worse and worse each season.

All sports are heading down that route. Huge amounts of money changing how games are run/played/consumed.

Depending on the popularity of the sport depends how quick that happens.

The minute they realised that whole fanbases were ok with just watching it on telly, in all corners of the land (subsequently world) the game up up for the sport that we grew up with.

It's generational now and a case of you don't know what you don't know.

Watching footy on the telly is a pale shadow of being there. Most telly clappers think that's just a reference to the atmosphere but you can't properly appreciate a game of footy without being able to see the whole pitch all of the time.

Then there's being able to form your own opinions on what you are watching and not relying on brain donors like carragher to tell you what to think.

How can you tell if someone is a Kopite? If the hat, scarf, T shirt or tattoo isn't enough of a clue, they will have told you within two sentences. Basically, it's a cult.

I've said it before, but your attention is now one of your most valuable assets as an individual. It's also the one thing you have power to decide how to use with respect to the media you consume.

All this stuff is predicated on viewing figures, attendances, etc etc. No one is a prisoner to this stuff, they can just choose not to engage.

I don't expect this approach will catch on to be honest, but it's increasingly how I see things.

I said I can choose how to spend my attention exactly as I choose how to spend my money.

Everyone turning on the CWC to say how awful it is is financially indistinguishable from everyone tuning in and enjoying it. The bottom line remains the same.

Same as opening links on the BBC or Daily Mail about the RS and sharing them on here. The BBC/Daily Mail won't care. They'll just see how many people clicked the link. "That went well, we'll do a few more of those.".

Depends if you want to be fatalist about it. I think that's pretty much the problem with a lot of things. "Everything's shit, and I've got no power so I might as well join in/put up with it".

The same people will then be complaining that everything is even shitter later on. Seems self-defeating to me. And we're not talking about chaining yourself to a railing or spraying paint on a bomber, we're talking about not clicking a link or watching a game of football.

Again, I am describing my own view of these things. I'm not the attention police. Do what you want, but I would just say there's a link between anyone's individual actions and the message / endorsement it sends to people making money out of it.
