I have never seen such problems with any computer.
To enable spell check in Windows 11, navigate to Settings > Time & Language > Typing and toggle on Auto-correct misspelled words and Highlight misspelled words.
On a Chromebook or a Linux computer you just go into settings to turn on a spell checker.
I have never seen either one stop downloading things into the download folder.
