Parish of St Ann's, Newton

In 1814 documentation of discharge from the Army the individual is described as "born in the Parish of St Ann's in or near the Town of Newton in the County of Devon". I'm not sure where this might be. Can anyone help me identify this Parish more closely?

Newton St Cyres dedicated to other saints, not St Anns.
Try looking at maps to find other churches in a radius about St Cyres, with Saint Ann as parish church.
Could be that he lived in Newton St Cyres on the outskirts and another parish was nearer to walk to for worship

I'm pretty sure Samuel's mother was Elizabeth Pengelly, and the closest baptism for him that might fit is in Zeal Monachorum in 1785 to Elizabeth and William Conybear - Conybear was used by Samuel and Winifred in the baptisms of their early children, later changed to Pengelly. But no mention of St Ann's in Zeal, nor in Newton St Cyres, Crediton, Sandford, Colebrooke. I suppose it's always possible that it was mis-recorded originally.

The National Archives website has a document (held by the Devon Archives) dated 1817, referring to a Samuel Pingle.

Born in Newton St Cyres, mentions he was discharged from 'His Majesty's Service the army 2 years previously.

That fits with the discharge record (more or less).

You should be able to get a copy from DRO (for a fee).

The Settlement Examination of 1817 relates to the parish Of Ilsington, so he was resident there at the time.

In 1851, in Ilsington, there is a Samuel PENGILEY in Ilsington with wife Winifred and a daughter. He's a Chelsea pensioner, place of birth unknown.

In 1861, he is in Ilsington, and his place of birth is shown as Newton St Cyres.

Samuel and Winifred are shown as the parents of 2 children (may have been more) baptised in Ilsington with the surname:

CONIBEARE or PENGELLY (spellings vary)

Would he be alive in 1851? listed as pensioner,
if not then you will have to check all parishes beginning with Newton, on Genuki will give details of the church , bit of a slog I am afraid, as there are quite a lot.

Thank you for all your posts. I have been mining the Pingle seam at TNA and DRO and found that Samuel Pingle is definitely the Samuel Pengelly later living in Ilsington with Winifred (Frost) as a Chelsea Pensioner. And along the way there have been several references to Newton St Cyres. It has been in looking for his parents that I have been trying to locate St Ann's, Newton, and thence possibly a baptism for him. But no luck so far - no baptisms for Samuel Pengelly in Newton St Cyres around the relevant time.

there is an old quote, by tre pol or pen you should know true Cornishmen. I found a Samuel Keast Pengelly who married Elizabeth Rowe at Duloe Cornwall 19.12.1787, could the St Anns ref be St Germans? and misheard along the line?
Have you found the marriage? Where did Winifred come from?

What about the use of the name (or alias) Conibear on the children's baptisms?

Perhaps there's a Conibear/Pengelly marriage?

there is a tree on ancestry with Conybeare Pengelly couple, perhaps when Samuel joined up he used his mothers name so he could not be found? Newton on the forms could be Newton Abbot where he joined? on the census in 1851 he says he does not know where he was born. Later census the enumerator assumed he was born Ilsington.
William Conybeare married Elizabeth Pengelly. 1785, which would tie up if he was 18 when he joined up in 1806, hope this helps

Perhaps when he joined up he gave his mothers maiden name so if he decided the life was not for him he could go home and assume his old identity, but once he had committed himself and would be in receipt of a pension, in the new name when he retired, he had to keep it in order to receive the pension.
I am sure this query has come up previously, perhaps not by you. The tree on ancestry has a link to a person you might like to contact.
