James Grigg - birthplace

Would welcome opinions as to the actual place of birth of James Grigg in 1871 Census. He is at Calstock, Cornwall - District 18, Schedule No. 250. Even the address is difficult, but fairly sure it is 25 Orchard Cottage(s). Place of birth is worse. Ancestry have it transcribed as Guenis and the wife is just ditto. In 1881 it is much clearer for him as Camborne & wife as Gwennap. In 1891 it is clear as Gwennap for both. I have wondered whether 1871 is supposed to be Gwennap but badly written ??

Does anyone have any thoughts?

If I have the right birth reg. for James, (Maiden name of mother - Pascoe) he was registered March Q 1842, in Redruth Cornwall. Three possible areas in Redruth district are Gwennap, Gwinear, Gwithian.
He appears to be living in Gwennap in 1851 so probably Gwennap is where he was born. As you say badly written on 1871.

Marriage. 2 Feb 1833. James Grigg/ Elizabeth Pascoe. Camborne
Baptism. 15 Nov 1834. Anne Grigg. Camborne. Parents James and Elizabeth. Residence Croft Michell.

Thanks for your interest everyone.

Agree that James looks like a son of James and Elizabeth (nee Pascoe) who married on 2 Feb 1833, at Camborne seem probable though had missed their daughter Anne. 1851 has James & Elizabeth, (with son James) at Lanner, Gwennap, no Anne but there is another son, John, born circa 1845 though haven't found him yet (though a burial at Gwennap 7 Oct 1874 of a John of Union House, aged 30 looks possible.

Have just been reducing possibilities(there are a few about that time) before going for a birth cert of 1842.

Always interested in what the Census years say about birth places as it gives an indication sometimes where the family might have been between census years.

Marriage Certificate for James and Jane Barnett has them as married at Redruth Reg. Office and both residing at Lanner, Gwennap. (Both their fathers were then deceased.) Their children are interesting for showing movements, James Henry (b 1871 says Gunnislake, Calstock but then 1881 says Lanner!), Abigail (b. Harwin, Glamorganshire but baptised Calstock), Bessie and Selina (both b. Gunnislake), Herbert (b. Winterbourne, Gloucs. baptised Bristol Methodist Downend Circuit), Nanny, b. Llantrisant, Glamorganshire)and the last 2, Mildred & Stephen, b.Gunnislake again (Bible Christian baptisms).

Finally just out of interest, and excuse my sense of humour. Have recently been reading, again, one of my several books on Cornwall and Devon, and was interested in a Devon mining expression, which is probably about the closest to the transcription I queried in my original post - "Gunnises". Nothing to do with places of birth as it is relevant to an old method of mining akin to modern open cast mining. The word indicates huge excavations, but I suppose you never know what you might find at the bottom of a hole!!

A James GRIGG was baptised at Camborne 23 Apr 1843 son of James & Elizabeth of Croft Michell, father a miner. (Source Cornwall OPC database). Anne also baptised at Camborne 15 Nov 1834.

1851 census has James 33, Elizabeth 35 and children james 9 born Camborne and John 6 born Gwennap, living at Lanner. 1861 has Elizabeth a widow with James living at Lanner Hill Gwennap.

John son of James died aged 14 buried Gwennap 20.7.1857, father James died 8/3/1857 aged49.
1861 census shows Elizabeth working at the mine!!lodging with son James at Lanner Hill Gwennap.

Thanks Judith, missed that one for John.

Must apologise generally that a simply question regarding trying to read writing when the family was in Cornwall - albeit Calstock which is in Tavistock Registratioin District - has taken things back deeper into Cornwall. However, generally after 1891, most of the children of James and Jane moved into Devon (particularly Abigail - Jane - who became my paternal grand mother a bit after she married my great grandfather, James Murrain). The Grigg children all then seemed to have variously moved to Devon and stay in Tavistock or Plymouth area, except 2 who then emigrated to USA. Bit unsure about one of the others, Nanney (also known as Annie once she left Calstock), first for London, where she married (Denis Bradley) and her first son (Leon Denis Bradley) was born, but then, after her husband died in London, she returned for the birth of her second son (Cyril Francis Bradley). The 2 sons continued to live in Devon but with relatives - Leon in 1911 living with Nanny/Annie's sister Selina (have to wait for 1921 to see if that continued!!) and Cyril living in Tavistock with my 2x G grandfather (Richard Murrin) and his daughter Annie Bentley. Don't have any idea where Annie/Nanny then went after she had abandonded both sons with relatives. My thinking at present is that she probably emigrated, but research is still work in progress on her. Again, apologies for straying out of Devon

Searched Free bmd for 1909 - 1930.

Nanny Grigg or Bradley - none for Marriages nor (apart for 2 Bradleys which were much too old) for deaths.

Annie Bradley or Grigg - so very many to chose from but none obvious in the death or marriages (expect one possibility for a marriage or an Annie Bradley to Yelland in East Stonehouse, June quarter 1927 - but not followed up as 1927 seemed too late to justify her giving up her 2 children after 1911 - or even likely after 1907 when then last son was born.

I found the Yelland marriage, not the right one.
Perhaps she reverted to her maiden name? have you looked on the census for her that way?

Yes but as I said last time didn't find anything for a marriage in her maiden name any earlier than the Yelland one, and I don't think she was likely to have left much before 1911. Really waiting for 1921 to see if it adds anything to help

you can always get the birth certificate, should give you the address, have you seen his marriage record? address will be on that/or the town, as he will probably be marrying in the brides home town.
