If I have the right birth reg. for James, (Maiden name of mother - Pascoe) he was registered March Q 1842, in Redruth Cornwall. Three possible areas in Redruth district are Gwennap, Gwinear, Gwithian.
He appears to be living in Gwennap in 1851 so probably Gwennap is where he was born. As you say badly written on 1871.
