Normally the wife takes the Settlement of her husband even if she has never been anywhere near his Parish.
Often there are disputes between parishes and these records, especially Settlement Examinations,can contain a great wealth of information.
Even more interesting is when bigamous marriages are involved and I know of a Mitchell whose settlement was Cullompton, but who had wives in Plymouth and London, and, as a vagrant, he was being removed from Newington - wonder if one could make a soap opera of a Mitchell meeting all his wives when they are all removed to one place!!
Parish Vestry minutes can also be a good source for these disputes, but one will have to wait for the reopening of Devon Heritage Centre, or if elsewhere, the relevant Record Office for those
