Hello and thanks for reading my message. I am stuck ... As a descendant of the Selway family, broadly from within the triangle Exmouth/Honiton/Branscombe, I am stuck at my 3rd great grandfather William Selway. As follows – his son was John Selway (b. Sidbury 1818, d.Honiton, buried Branscombe 1896). He was one of the blacksmiths of Branscombe of the 19th Century, working the Hole Bottom forge for many years. John married Hermina Farrant at St. Michael’s Otterton in 1838. Their marriage certificate shows his father as William (labourer) and witnessed by a John Newton and Hermina (?) Sanders. John’s baptism details also show his mother to be Mary. So far, I have been unable to trace details of either of these any further, except that William’s father could be James Salway (b. 1769 Dunkeswell) and mother Sarah Moore (b 1776 Devon). But, just to confuse the issue there was a William and Mary Selway from Dunkeswell at about the same time - he became a thatcher in Uffculme, and I believe this family to be a red herring! Any help or guidance as to how to progress would be much appreciated.
