Re: Stress test"
Followup question for you Southwest Ag...if there were no stress carriers or positives, it wouldn't matter would it? The only thing you could show is a negative because that's all that would exist. You would still get to raise and show a papered Poland no different than today. The only difference is that the show ring would only have 'negatives' now. I get that there's been a number of successful Polands that are carriers...but I'm struggling to see how collectively removing the stress gene would negatively impact the industry? I can also appreciate that there are a number of carrier hogs in herds today (by the sounds of it, you have some solid generators yourself) and that we can't just simply 'remove the stress gene' - nor am I even remotely proposing it. I guess I'm questioning 'why' you consider the stress gene to be a tool in the belt? I get that the current landscape has had plenty of success with carrier animals and that we all have to make decisions based on that landscape (selecting based on stress status being one of those tools)...but, hypothetically speaking, if no such 'carriers' existed, what would be the drawback - as in what would we actually lose? And if the answer is nothing, then is it really a tool? For what its worth we've used both negatives and carriers over the years with varied levels of success out of both sides of the debate.
