WRDZ AM 1300 applied for an STA with FCC to return on the air with 1 kW from the Alsip site, while their search for permanent location. Details here:

Ham radio operators have more robust wire antenna setups than that. 20 feet.

The request itself, I have never read one worded like that. It is honest, but def not written by legal or a seasoned engineer.

Unless they can move the COL, duplex with someone else or colocate with something else they own on AM, 1300 might be on this STA for a long time or going away.

Wow, if I handed in that app as my Final in my college RF Communications class, I would have earned a 2.0 for the semester.

1.3 MHz into a 20’ vertical. Yeah, okay. With 1 kW? Have fun tuning that. The shack’s gonna be hot with reflected power… sizzle fo schizzle

But it will be a fun DX target from, umm… Palos Hills or Worth.

I loaded up my long wire fence to do 160 meters. With a tuner and 100 wats at the radio and probably 1 watt if I am lucky at the fence, I made a few state wide contacts, barely.

I think they just threw that at the FCC hoping for a "Hail Mary". Gets approved, awesome. If not, Plan B?

I suppose it’s better than just letting the FCC change the call to DWRDZ in the database 😬… And maybe it will cover a half-dozen square miles until they figure out a viable yet affordable solution. But… 1 kW? That’s going to radiate 600 W straight up, 1 W horizontal, and 399 W back into the TX hut.

Plan B: Carrier current? 😄

I’ll give ‘em applause for trying, though.

I don't think we'll have a chance to hear the signal. If they do go back on the air, that would be nice. It would be nice to be closer to their site. Yes, 1300 put out a "solid signal." I could get it here in DuPage, but still be able to get 1290 (Peoria) and 1310 DX catches at night.

I'm from Hickory Hills, and always got 1300 clear as a bell. I am now in DuPage County, but I'll see how the signal is (from my location, outside Hinsdale, and in my hometown).

AM Radio Fan, not sure if you looked at the FCC filing, one of the 2 files is a picture of the proposed antenna. If it gets out for 1 mile, they will be lucky. If the shack burns down I hope they have insurance.

That antenna farm along I-294 did put out a solid signal on 1300, all the way into eastern Will County and across the border in Indiana. We’ll see what the future holds.

FCC approved the STA application by WRDZ. It appears they have until November 2, 2024 to put on the air:

LOOL. Are we all going to have a fox hunt to try to find the TX site or a party in the filed behind it, as we all start glowing? 🤣

Insane the FCC even approved that write up that was submitted. Rubber stamp generation after all the cuts to their department.
