I'm kind of surprised there has been no consolidation here.
I'm sure The River classic hits bills well. Will Rock probably does too? The issue is WRXQ. It's just a very niche borderline death metal at times station, broadcasting to a cornfield. Is there that much a following besides the 40 people that hang out at Freaks Top Fuel Saloon? I can't see this billing well...or billing better than the other 2. As an advertiser, I'd rather spend my money with the classic hit and/or the rock station that I view as "better".
WIIL bills well. Everything is sponsored. Doller a holler. Lots of advertisers. Two states. Lots of promotions. Their staff is minimal. Majority of the airstaff does other things. Midday guy is the PD. Afternoon guy is the sales guy. Evening guy us the promotions guy.
I know WERV also performs pretty well. Not sure about WRXQ. Alpha technically doesn't own WRXQ. It's a shadow company that helps them cheat the ownership cap by not owning the station but basically running it like they do. I don't know how well it performs.
WRXQ would be the perfect station to sell to EMF. Air1 coverage for Morris. It must still be making Alpha at least some money if they haven't sold it yet.
I agree with Z, Q-Rock is low budget, the station pipes in HardDrive XL with Lou Brutus evenings. They recently showed Dawn Avello the door and shifted Kati Waldron to cover. My unquantified experience is that there are a lot gearheads in the listening area — Wilmington, Joliet, Coal City, Diamond, Kankakee, you’ll hear Q-Rock 100.7 coming from garages through the area. The advertisers are local bars, weekend band venues, auto parts stores, testosterone boosters, local eateries, etc. They’re tapped into a revenue lifeline just big enough to sustain, for however long that lasts.
Side note, I see WRXQ is streaming via several platforms, including Audacy. Audacy? I’m guessing Alpha or Walnut aren’t paying anything for that carriage? It’s hard for me to even grasp who pays who, and who benefits most, with arrangements like this.
Matter of time. Don't think they can handle more than one project at once to streamline and combine brands.
Jeremy is right, WIIL is doing great considering how and where it is. But it doesn't mean they won't just pipe it to Wilmington.
Also, when they realize that 105.5 is too much overlap, I believe you will see a River flowing through there and they can own the Western suburbs. Think about the coverage between 95.9 and 105.5 - you have all of the West suburbs, N and S covered. That format is prime for that area.
