If you're in analog range, it will just drop back to analog. This can be extremely annoying if the station is not engineered correctly and there is an audio delay between the analog and the HD. Milwaukee radio has a problem with this. It gives off a skipping effect.
Initially HD was only a small portion of the station's power. A 50kw station would mean 50 watts or less. Newer transmitters have increased the power. The FCC is considering more.
The big problem with that is for people without HD Radios. If there is a first adjacent signal, you will hear hash interference. This is a big problem in Kenosha for example. You can normally hear figure 95.5 and 95.7 from Milwaukee. Their HD signals create static on the analog adjacents, so as a result more static when driving around listening to them even if you have no HD.
This is why I would prefer HD to be shut off all together unless they are using the sub channels. There's no other reason for it. It rarely sounds better.
