It totally makes sense why stations are dropping their HD2’s if they have to keep forking out 3% of their gross profit or whatever the max flat fee is. As for WSSR, assuming they were spreading out the fee as payments then it makes sense to turn off the equipment to stop the bleeding. I really doubt that most listeners of a suburban station, where the signal is decent, care if they are hearing analog or digital.

I am kind of surprised that down in my patches of farmland Milner Media fired up HD on 95.1 WFAV Kankakee, carrying CHR WFAV on HD1 and River Country on HD2. River Country already has decent FM coverage from 101.7 WIVR, 103.7 WYUR, and Bourbonnais translator 96.1 W241BS.

WGCI HD2 has been off for at least a couple years I think. Definitely long before WLIT HD2 disappeared.
