My uncle Joseph E. DeSeve GM/3c was an Armed Guard on the Millenocket. The ship was sunk on June 17th 1942 in the Carribean (the northeast of Cuba) by german u-boat 129, he was one of eleven killed. His body was never found and he remaines MIA (lost at sea) as of this posting. If there is anyone who remembers Joe or any other crew members or information regarding the Millenocket please contact me.

Thinking of you on this Memorial Day weekend 2017 Uncle Joe. You are not forgotten. I heard from a grandson of a fellow sailor that was killed with on June 17th, 1942. His name is Kurt Semon and his grandfather was 3rd class Joseph Semon. We remember you both this Memorial Day and every day.424

To my Uncle Joseph E De Seve thank you for your service and sacrifice to our country. 83 years ago today June 17th, 1942 your ship the SS Millinocket was sunk off the coast of Cuba and you were forever mia. Rest peacefully, you are not forgotten.

My grandfather was also lost on the SS Millinocket that day. He was 3rd Mate Joseph Semon sometimes misspelled as Seman.

No problem. By the way, my son is currently in his plebe year at the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY. First in my family to take the college route. All else in my family took the hard nocks route to become maverick Captains & Chief Engineers. They have a very nice New England style mariner Chapel at the Academy for all faiths and in the alter area is a book under glass and each week a page is turned. It is a large book and has the names of all WW2 Merchant Marine sailors who died in service during the war. I am hoping I am there when the book is open to my grandfather's page so I can take a photograph for the family.

Kurt, thanks for all the information you've provided i appreciate it. Congratulations on your son I'm sure your very proud! The naval tradition for your family continues. Our families are forever connected in the sinking of the Millinocket and the tragic loss of our family members.

Sadly no, he did not survive. As we understand it it was common for people to sleep topside because of the heat and that is where he was when the torpedo hit. My grandfather was blown overboard never to be seen again. My father was also a mariner and joined the USN after his father's death becoming a BM 1st class on a minesweeper and returned to merchant marine service after the war. There is a plaque memorial at the Town Hall in Millinocket, Maine placed there by the VFW Post 4154. It list those who died that day. This was the name sake community. The ship was originally built to support the Maine wood & paper industry.

I also look for information from time to time and that is how I came across your posts.

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the sinking of the SS Millenocket, June 17th, 1942. My uncle Joe De Seve was originally declared MIA or "lost at sea" and eventually declared deceased. Thinking of you on this day Uncle Joe, your memory lives on as does your name. Rest In Peace.

Thought I would see your annual Veterans Day remembrance of your Uncle but not posted yet. I look from time to time as my grandfather died on the ship also. You may recall my 2017 responses. I noted your Uncle was from Albany. I live about 25 minutes north west from there.
