Sadly no, he did not survive. As we understand it it was common for people to sleep topside because of the heat and that is where he was when the torpedo hit. My grandfather was blown overboard never to be seen again. My father was also a mariner and joined the USN after his father's death becoming a BM 1st class on a minesweeper and returned to merchant marine service after the war. There is a plaque memorial at the Town Hall in Millinocket, Maine placed there by the VFW Post 4154. It list those who died that day. This was the name sake community. The ship was originally built to support the Maine wood & paper industry. I also look for information from time to time and that is how I came across your posts. Best regards, Kurt
