SS Permanente"
Over the years it's been hard to find out much about her. She was the SS Ancon before that, and the first official ship through the Panama Canal. But our association with her was through our mother, a WW2 war bride who travelled from New York to San Francisco by train and then on the Permanente to New Zealand via Tahiti. Mother was told in San Francisco that the Permanente was a very good stable ship and that it would be a comfortable ride. A gun barbet was welded up and used as a swimming pool in the tropics. The voyage ended with the newly weds reunited in Wellington. We, the two eldest sons, got to go through the Panama Canal on the way to NY on the Zuiderkrus and the return on the Port Wyndham in 1954, about 9 years after mother's voyage out.
