Interesting question, so I went and looked at the pictures I have of my Dad, and he was wearing the flat top, gold lettered hat in his boot camp graduation picture, but he was never wearing that hat in any other picture I have of him.

Don't have any idea what the white "dixie cups" were called, but I sure remember them. Dad used to bring them home for me to "play with" when I was pretty young. I remember wearing it all the time and thinking I was really something special because I had a real navy hat.
