Armed Guard duty got first call on graduates of signal schools during 1942-43, taking the top graduates, but later in the war strikers started appearing also. It was not hard to make signalman first class in the Armed Guard as long as you had the required time as a signalman second. I joined the fleet after the war ended in Europe and ended up on the USS Otus in Leyte Gulf, serving as a tender in the area.
