Maybe your cutter was damaged from the start.
Mine works fine even for plastic. I've tried it succesfully on thin plexiglas.
This is great also to cut extra fine shavings on plastic parts when you need to make some adjustement.
The cutter stops every 4 or 5 minutes for safety, I've just to press the side button to restart.
