"LAMPS [Mk 1] entered service quite late in the DLGN 38 design process, but even so a requirement for a hangar and helo pad had to be levied. The solution chosen was quite neat: this late, the superstructure could not be moved about, but there was unused hull space right aft within the hull. A dual-purpose elevator and door were provided to transport the single helicopter between the hangar and the fantail. In practice this idea proved unfortunate. Located right aft, the helicopter suffered from maximum hull vibration and motion. The seal between the door and deck leaked badly and required frequent replacement.
