The hatch leaked from day one and despite a lot of effort, the Navy could not fix the inherent design flaw. There were enough ships with helicopter facilities, that the Navy could forgo these 4 ships. So, the hangar was scrapped and the hatch welded shut (or replaced and welded shut). Contrast this to the WW2 cruisers with hangars, but a raised hatch, but that would compromise the landing area. The hangar became a classroom. Continuous onboard training by the nuclear Navy is part of the culture and the space was a welcome development. Later, the Navy decided to install Tomahawk ABLs.
