I don't often look on this site but like the rest of us 'Happy Islanders' I'm now retired. JUST GOT BACK. I was licky to go out for a holiday but to my wifes dismay I spent quite some time trying to get onto the Island, but no joy. JSTS is now part of a PLA Military site so no go apart from the odd open day about twice per year. I wasn't lucky (I also didn't think that the Chinese Authorities would be too keen on a Brit wandering about) The best I could do was totake smoe photos from the top of the FCC building (Phone photos so not good quality) I will post them shortly. I have lots of other photosm mainly Kowloon and NTs If anyone wants them let me know.

Hi Mike. Sorry to hear that you were unable to access JSTS Stonecutters during your recent H.K. visit. Looking at Google earth pictures and the added street view, you can get a good idea what it's like there now. Nice tall fences, some accomodation blocks and various sheds, as well as a lovely sewerage works. I also found out that you can take a bus there from Kowloon, but it stops short of JSTS. Roughly near the old Jr rates mess area. There is a chance that a pass can be obtained from the authorities, but this would have to be done "well in advance" of a holiday. If you search You Tube, there are a number of short films and even a T.V. programme produced shortly before 1997 change over. This shows a number of buildings and includes East Pier watchtower chapel. + a lot of historical Island history info. Ie. The tunnels and Ex-geisher house. ( Not in use during our time there I might add !! ) Somewhere in my loft I have a VIDEO tape recorded from the T.V. many years ago, about the islands birds. ( Feathered variety ) If I come across it, i'll let you know. From your ex neighbours at East View Bungalows. Colin & Carol.

Colin, You are party right in what you say. I spent quite some time with HK Tourist Board at the Star Ferry Terminal who in turn did a lot of research for me. There is a bus service (I beleive it was a 6A) but it only runs during opoen days. I would love to see the old video if you let me have it. One thing we did find is that sites such as Google HK are more informative than the UK site. From what we could see the staion itels, East Pier and the JR mess all gone. I think that our bungalows and some of the flats could still exist. That said whilst driving along the coast road (by the new container port) you can zoom in on the bay area and it doesn't look familiar. On that subject of familier, I was amazed how relaxed and at home I felt wandering from Star Ferry to Nathan Road, past Chins Arts & Crafts, although much has changed including the new YMCA building and the underpass and a helipad on top of the Peninsula Hotel.

If you look up "You Tube " ... Put in the following search :- Eye on Stonecutters Island, Hong Kong, 1992. There is a 20 minute film, although the definition is not too goo.
