I went to St Georges School 79-81 and was part of the REME kids gang with Jan Chapman, having a blast with the BFES youth club camps at Stonecutters. The girls would climb down the rear gutter spikes to the ground level and dart over to the rear kitchen behind the red brick boys block, or sneak up to the boys dorm. There was a church in the centre courtyard. The girls whitewash block also had a first floor theatre area with wooden floors. It had smaller dorm rooms at either end of the top floor with a long verandah on the courtyard side facing the church. The BFES did a great job turning it into a youth backpacker style facility, arriving by navy launch from HMS Tamar and splash parties at the Lido were memorable. Never forget the Pilgrims Way youth club camp in 1980 with REME Ross Tooley's famous treasure hunt across the island, to win a medallion!
