I was trying to get that eighth star (in "Octopus Dance") maybe a week ago, but after I got up to 45 attempts, I took a break.
One weird thing keeps happening on that game in particular. The GamePad will kind of skip a frame, and then it says it's losing sync with the console. I mostly see it in that specific attraction, which is weird. It will either ignore my input on the sticks, or it tries to recalibrate in the middle of a turn, so you pretty much know that'll be counted as a miss. I sit a little off on an angle (compared to the sensor bar), so I wonder if that's the issue. Does it try to check your status in between rounds? The only other thing I can figure is interference. I would guess that the GamePad might communicate over Bluetooth, and I only know of one other Bluetooth antenna in the immediate area (Apple TV). I unplugged the Apple TV, but I think there was still an error message or attempts to recalibrate.
Somehow, on the 47th attempt, I got all the way to the final round with a really low number of misses (possibly zero). In fact, when they stopped me after the 50th pattern, I still had two hearts. I can't tell you how I did it, since that didn't happen again in three more tries. It kind of bugged me how they forced me to stop there, when I know there's a sixth round. I think I set a new personal record with 46 perfects, 2 OKs, and then just two misses. That set a new high score, but then I think I beat the top score on the 48th attempt with fewer perfects, if that makes sense. It could have to do with the number of consecutive perfects, then? Then, in two more tries, my scores were going back down again (lower on #50 than #49).
I notice how I used to panic when the octopus shoots ink. Now, I realize that sometimes the ink doesn't block your view on the GamePad (I still saw the scuba guy leaning to a side, jumping, or maybe reaching down. A few other ink patterns weren't overly tough to mirror by looking at the TV.
So, after completing five rounds, I thought that would be worth one of the stamps. I guess not! Technically, if you did everything perfect, you should earn the "Flawless Fifty." Do you think that forces you to hit 50 times in a row, or just have 50 total perfects (meaning you went into the sixth round with an OK or a miss)?
In the coin mini-game, I stopped at the 199 prize mark. There IS a huge prize that opened up on a section of grass that I thought looked empty (between Luigi's Mansion and something else). I don't want to get to the 200th prize yet! The actual coin puzzle for that one looked a little tough. There's one of the skulls right in the middle.
After that, I wasn't sure which stamps or which star to work on next. For today, I played some more of "Metroid Blast." I probably played on Kraid's stage 5-10 times as the ship. I can't seem to find all the targets to hit once he rises higher above the lava (and those pirates are annoying). I wondered about "In the Belly of the Beast" on the list of stamps. So, I switched to being a Mii in a Samus suit.
From what I can tell, you aren't able to grapple into Kraid's mouth without someone playing as the gunship. The good news is that, even without me playing as a Wii remote for several months, I picked up the controls pretty quickly, and I think I beat Kraid by the third turn (maybe even the second). There are these platforms that poke out from his "body" and stay extended. For some reason, they're useless when you're in the ship. On foot, they're pretty much mandatory. In his third form, I managed to get to a platform where I was on my last heart, but I must have been out of the line of any fire or pirates. I just had to keep waiting for him to rotate, shoot his nose, and get the correct angle on my charge bombs. That worked with me hardly moving. As the ship, it feels like you can never hover in one place without taking hits.
I think I'm confused about the next star, since I played the games in a certain OCD order. I probably played "Takamaru's Ninja Castle" ninth, because of "Nin" in the title. Well, I already have that star. I also don't think I want to be a star in "Metroid Blast" next, since that would complete all the stars for the 1-5 player games. I'm the furthest behind on the single player games (four out of six). Cap"ten" Falcon's game might have been my thinking when I first played each attraction. Ba"11"oon Fight should be 11, but they already gave me that star. For "Animal Crossing," I think it was the only game left at #12 (no getting fancy or trying to play the octopus game eighth). Basically, it might not matter that much for these last four stars. I'll probably go back to that other pattern when I'm trying to finish some of the stamps.
In Yoshi's game, I think I'm only missing the two stamps that involve completing every gate. For one of them, I don't even think you can use the checkmarks to help you! I'm not sure if you're allowed to lose any lives, but the rule about no assistance from gifts or a Wii remote definitely applies.
Donkey Kong is probably the game where I feel the least confident about getting the star status. I still haven't cleared area 9 on the first maze. The game says I've played his attraction about 39 times. How about some of those stamps, too? Skip 30 bananas?!!
Well, it's getting kind of late. I said I'd try to put 70 hours into this game and then see what's left? I could still imagine doing that, but then I might switch to my other games that haven't been played at all yet.
