Kind of off-topic: Last time, I realized that I forgot to list "Madden NFL '13" as a game I haven't played yet. I mean, I'm not even sure how long ago the cover athlete (Calvin "Megatron" Johnson) retired! I was saving it to debut as the 13th game I play for the first time. It was actually the first game I bought for the system (available before Wii U's street date).
OK, ... so, it sounds like I've gotten more than 20% further in the game (compared to when I had 35 hours in the Activity Log), but there's only one area (the prize boxes) where it feels like I've made a bunch of progress. I've won and opened 177 of those items. The jukebox is only four tracks away from being complete! It could be even more (than 177), since I have 97 coins in the bank. I'll be kind of sad when that Pachinko game is complete. Can you keep playing, even when it stops awarding prizes? It kind of bothers me how a few of the boxes show up in weird places, like blocking the ribbon/"carpet" towards one of the entrances. Speaking of which, why are there prizes right in the doorway leading to the attractions? A few of those are neat, like the two cranks in front of Donkey Kong's game. The Triforce I can understand. There are still patches of the "grass" that look empty to me. Also, I see stuff for certain games all over the place, rather than close to that game. They might not all have the same number of prizes for each character or series, then? I'm just not sure how they picked the locations for some of them.
Last time, it sounded like I still had four stars (I'd just won my fourth in "Mario Chase"). Well, you can put a FIFTH star on the list, thanks to "Pikmin Adventure." I wasn't sure how close I was getting to a star. First, there were eight cards on the screen. Then, an arrow shows you areas 9 through 16. The final boss (spoiler) is sort of a "praying mantis"?
Well, I beat area 16 as a blue pikmin, and then Monita talked about how there were still bonus stages. Even when I had level 15 available, and I had beaten about half of the levels with both Olimar and the giant pikmin, my profile was saying 43% completion. So, it seems like I'm only about halfway done, but they already gave me a star?!! (I realize they probably had to balance how everybody might not try to complete every game or they might not be skilled enough to master the bonus levels. How much should you complete, though, to be considered a "Star Player"?)
I had been beating levels as Olimar to open up the new areas. When I got to part 15, it was an annoying time trial. The trick is, you come to kind of a pond where the camera even pauses (hint, hint) to show you bombs off to the side, but I wasn't running towards them to clear out the horde of enemies. I'm not sure if the AI player planted a bomb near the one that wasn't lit, and the chain explosion booted me off the screen! Once I got past part 15, I just kept going as a Blue Pikmin and defeated the boss level. It didn't mention a stamp for doing that, so I wonder if you need to beat every non-bonus stage as both Olimar and the big pikmin to get that award.
Pikmin is now my most popular attraction (60 attempts). If you figure that I cleared 14 areas as Olimar, and 16 as a pikmin, I've played each stage an average of four times? That doesn't sound too difficult. I'm sure there are some places where I've played them about seven times, though.
My thoughts on that game were how you probably need a friend playing with you all the time!!! As Olimar, I didn't really pay attention to how the computer used the blue pikmin (you mostly keep tapping the GamePad screen). As a blue pikmin, though, I look at the TV (you're not even holding the GamePad), and the Olimar player just looks like a spectator who expects you to do everything! I could be wrong. He/she just seems to attack more of the bricks than the enemies . Then, I'll be trying to open the question block to get more nectar or a power-up. I take about half of the nectar, and leave a power-up for Olimar. The AI just stares at it or follows where I'm walking. I've had stages where I think I was up to level 18 from nectar, and Olimar barely had level 5 pikmin! You can kind of picture how annoying those hesitations are in the time trial areas! You're pretty much depending on AI Olimar to blow a whistle that springs you to a new area.
One last observation: I guess it's true in most of the games, but isn't it weird to be on a 3D map and controlling the big pikmin with a four-way digital pad on the Wii remote?
I believe I have 29 stamps overall, which sounds like four more than last time, but I feel kind of stalled in terms of winning more of them. The last few probably came from the "Luigi's Ghost Mansion" game, where I earned all five before I even reached 30 matches (required for the star).
Mainly, I've been trying to alternate between the Pikmin game and Donkey Kong. I've gotten a high score over 3,000 in Donkey Kong if that means anything. It used to be around 2,500 or 2,800. I can clear most areas in less than 15 seconds if I don't make any mistakes. I think it only took me 5-10 attempts to figure out the part where you lift platforms by holding L. Then, maybe the same with the tilting ramps. It's annoying to get all the way past the ramps and then tip over trying to roll to the bottom left corner!
Then, I have almost NO clue how to get your rhythm in area 9. I've probably been as high as the second elevator. On YouTube, snot nosed kids are telling you, "This was really easy" or "Just flick the button" or "Don't tilt the GamePad." Well, how do you roll off the elevator without tilting? Then, should you be level when "flicking" R or ZR? I can't imagine how it will feel to finish that part!
I think I got further in the Octopus game a week ago. There was a movement he did with holding hands up (in opposite directions) and then rotating the stick 180 degrees to flip them the other way. I think I got charged with a miss for not rotating them from being fully extended.
To kind of summarize:
Yoshi's Fruit Cart: Star player, but I only remember seeing about 2/3 of the gates
Takamaru's Ninja Castle: Star player, with only one stamp left
Balloon Trip Breeze: Star player already; Nowhere near finishing every level; I think I've earned two of the stamps
Donkey Kong's Crash Course: I keep losing in area 9 of the first maze
Octopus Dance: Not focusing too much on it; I've been to maybe the third or fourth round in my best performance
Captain Falcon('s Twister Race?): I haven't played it for a while; I can remember losing in area 11
Mario Chase: Star player; three stages unlocked; five stamps (complete, except to play against other people?)
Luigi's Ghost Mansion: I think I was up to 27 rounds, with all five stamps (almost a star player)
Animal Crossing: Two stamps? I'm not sure how many times I've played it. I was planning to maybe have it be the last game where I win a star (assuming I can get there in the other 11).
Legend of Zelda: I forget. Maybe I was 35% complete? I got to some levels that had the spiders (skulltula?).
Metroid: I've played that a bunch, too. It seems to be the hardest game (harder than DK?!!). My progress was up to maybe the stage where you fight Kraid.
Pikmin Adventure: I mentioned a lot of my progress above. I might only have one stamp so far. You could be able to get 10 total, since there's a Versus mode? Monita talked about the bonus levels, but it was almost the end of my 90 minute session.
Now I'm awake past 1 AM! The verdict seems to be: A really neat idea for these games, but I might not be getting the full experience (without multiple human players). I've seen how stages from Mario Chase expand with three or four Toads (thanks to the magic of YouTube). Are Luigi's Mansion and Animal Crossing like that, too? To me, the areas look TINY in a 1 vs 1 scenario. I guess that's trying to make it easier for Toad in the Mario game, or for the guardians to win at Animal Crossing. Luigi's game has all the extra Monitas, so it looks hard for a ghost to win 1 vs 1.
