: First, I played "Asteroids." It's
: pretty straightforward, right? You're the
: triangle. The rocks are targets to shoot.
: I'm not sure how I was kind of warping
: around the screen (pulling down on the
: stick?).
Yeah, if I remember "down" is the "hyperspace" which you should ONLY use when in IMMEDIATE danger as you have NO idea where you'll end up. "Up" is "thrust" and also not something to use unless necessary since you'll keep drifting around unless you thrust the other direction and try to get stationary again.
: Third, I played "Centipede." The
: jumping bug kept getting in my way. I'm not
: sure what strategy you have to use in that
: game.
I'm guessing by "jumping bug" you mean what's supposed to be the spider? It comes out of one side and bounces around the area where you are. As far as strategy, well, the centipede coming down the screen you want to try to hit the head as much as possible because when you hit body parts it splits and grows a new head so then you'll have multiple parts coming down the screen. The spider, if it comes out of the right side of the screen, will only move to the left (aside from up & down). It will NOT move back the opposite way. So if it comes out of the right side of the screen, once it's to the left of you, you don't have to worry about it coming back.
I think
: "Frogger" was next. That's pretty
: familiar. Do you ever use the orange
: button, or just move with the stick? I
: wasn't sure what was perched on some of the
: logs (bonus points or something that kills
: you?).
No, the button doesn't do anything. Many times on the logs you'll have a female frog jumping back and forth across it. Pick her up and get to one of the home spots at the top for bonus points. In later rounds there might be snakes that are on logs. They are NOT to be touched. :-)
: "Missile Command" was like I
: remembered. I wonder how they got the idea?
: Basically, something is coming towards your
: buildings on the bottom of the screen
: (missiles?). You are firing some kind of
: explosive by using a cursor to aim. It
: seems like you can only shoot a certain
: number of bombs in a row before needing to
: recharge, and there's probably a limit to
: how many you can fire (but I haven't run out
: in any round). You get bonus points for the
: extra explosives and for guarding the
: buildings. I'm not sure why the missiles
: aim at buildings that are already leveled
: sometimes, or if it matters that you didn't
: defend something that was already destroyed.
: What happens when the missiles hit your
: central turret? It seems like you can keep
: going until all of the buildings are gone.
I used to be pretty good at Missile Command when I was a kid... probably I'd suck horribly today. LOL I wonder if the 2600 only limited you to a certain number of missiles shot at a time before you could shoot more? Not sure.
The incoming missiles just come in aiming at one of the 6 cities or your base. If a city is already gone, you can actually use that to your advantage if there are multiple missiles and just focus on the cities you have left.
When a missile hits your base you lose whatever set of 10 missiles was currently in it. In the arcade version of the game you had 3 bases... one on the left, one on the right, and one in the center and each had 10 missiles you could use. If an incoming missile hit one, those missiles you had there are gone. On the Atari 2600 they went with one central base (most likely because with only one button, it'd be near impossible to be able to control shooting from 3 bases). So the central base has 30 missiles that "load up" in bunches of 10. So if an incoming missile hits it and it was your first or second batch of 10, the next batch will load up.
: "Space Invaders" didn't feel like
: the Atari 2600 version. There was something
: weird about the shapes of the aliens. It's
: still the same idea of how you're a ship or
: something else that's firing up and the
: invaders keep moving down line by line.
You mean it didn't look like this...
In
: chess and pinball, I didn't know what I was
: doing.
Well, chess is chess (although it looks a bit odd with the graphic style of the old 2600) and if you play a higher level computer opponent the game will "think" for longer periods of time (where the screen flashes colors until the computer moves).
In pinball I remember being able to control the "nudge" aspect to where I could get virtually an unlimited score. The "rollover" on the upper left area that was basically the Atari symbol, I'd control the ball to bounce up and down through it virtually as long as I wanted. To "nudge" you'd hold down the button and then move the joystick whichever direction you wanted to affect the ball's movement. You couldn't do it for very long each time or you'd tilt. So going through that rollover, for example, if the ball was moving with a drift to the right, I'd "nudge" left to go through, then it'd hit the bumper below it and I'd "nudge" left to go through as it was bouncing up. I'd basically just keep nudging as it went up and down releasing the button each time so I could nudge again. It was tricky as hell but once I had it down... TONS of points! :-)
