I have kind of mixed feelings or mixed reviews so far. One nice thing I remember about Atari games was how they were hard enough to make you give up playing within about an hour. Maybe not even that long? That could be why this system has 101 games.
My first impression of the console itself is how it feels lightweight or cheap. I guess electronic circuits keep shrinking and it wouldn't need a lot of components to run Atari games. The joystick feels a lot lighter than I can remember. At first, I wasn't sure if mine was detecting a downward pull on the stick. I might have to "break it in."
I know that the original graphics were really rough or pixelated. The thing that bugged me was how the menu screens were also pixelated or blurry. It's hard to tell if you can improve that. There's some text that looks clear (basically a scrolling "marquee" talking about the company who made the system). The box art suffers the most from the pixelation. They look like JPEGs on the lowest setting. The names of each game are sort of legible. My TV was saying that the image was "480i," which sounds even higher than the Atari's original specifications. What I do notice is how some of the text being upscaled to 768p reminds me of a few screens in "Star Fox 64" (it should also be a 480i game).
First, I played "Asteroids." It's pretty straightforward, right? You're the triangle. The rocks are targets to shoot. I'm not sure how I was kind of warping around the screen (pulling down on the stick?). I forget what I tried next. I think "Blackjack," but I couldn't understand the controls. There's apparently an "Atari Age" site with old instruction manuals.
Third, I played "Centipede." The jumping bug kept getting in my way. I'm not sure what strategy you have to use in that game. I couldn't figure out a "Double Dunk" basketball game. I think "Frogger" was next. That's pretty familiar. Do you ever use the orange button, or just move with the stick? I wasn't sure what was perched on some of the logs (bonus points or something that kills you?).
There must be multiple football and baseball games, but they're really limited by the graphics and the single action button. I was on what sort of looked like a football field, but it didn't look like 11 vs 11. At most, I think each team had six players. I wasn't sure if I was hiking the ball to a runner or a QB. Then I only saw one person running a pattern, but he became a square in the distance and I had no clear passing lane. The baseball game seemed familiar, since I knew how to hit automatic home runs. You just hold down and time your swing. If the ball makes it past the outfielder(s), that's a run for your team. When I was pitching, it just kept calling ball unless the batter took a swing. I couldn't figure out the trick to throwing strikes. When I walked in about three runs, I just reset to the main menu. That inning may have literally lasted forever.
"Miss It" seemed like a new game and felt self-explanatory. You're inside a box and represented by a black square. Other colored squares keep bouncing around trying to crash into you. I seemed to get the best score pretty early and then started doing worse. I couldn't tell how they count up the points. You seem to get more points from moving instead of just dodging.
"Missile Command" was like I remembered. I wonder how they got the idea? Basically, something is coming towards your buildings on the bottom of the screen (missiles?). You are firing some kind of explosive by using a cursor to aim. It seems like you can only shoot a certain number of bombs in a row before needing to recharge, and there's probably a limit to how many you can fire (but I haven't run out in any round). You get bonus points for the extra explosives and for guarding the buildings. I'm not sure why the missiles aim at buildings that are already leveled sometimes, or if it matters that you didn't defend something that was already destroyed. What happens when the missiles hit your central turret? It seems like you can keep going until all of the buildings are gone.
"Space Invaders" didn't feel like the Atari 2600 version. There was something weird about the shapes of the aliens. It's still the same idea of how you're a ship or something else that's firing up and the invaders keep moving down line by line. In chess and pinball, I didn't know what I was doing.
Basically, it's kind of cool for an hour or two. I realize they didn't include an HDMI output, and the graphics were going to be true to the original limitations. It was just a pretty disappointing job they did with the menu screen. There's a good variety of games, and I can recognize the more popular names. I should probably check out "Atari Age" for some of the instructions.
