The tablet/GamePad isn't all that heavy. It's still kind of wide, but I could almost forget that I'm not holding a regular controller. One thing I wonder with the controllers that have both "shoulder" buttons AND the Z-triggers is, how do you operate those in game? I guess I'd have to play a game that uses them to find out. What I mean is, you could probably use both sets of buttons if your index fingers are on the "shoulder" L and R, and then your middle fingers might be good for the triggers. I'm probably used to switching my index fingers between the button I need at that moment (on GameCube), and I haven't really needed the "triggers" on newer controllers that have them (The Classic one for Virtual Console games).
I know that the GamePad screen is "SD," but have you ever seen it play videos in games? I can see why they advertise the ability to play without using the TV. From what I've read, that screen should be 480p. Here's the weird thing. That's probably BETTER than what's recorded on most DVDs, but I doubt you've seen true DVD picture quality on a screen that intentionally has the right number of pixels for watching DVD material. On analog TVs, you sometimes lost several of the scan lines from the "letterbox" effect. Then, whatever was left got displayed as "interlaced" video where it flashed half of a picture (odd or even lines) and then the missing lines a fraction of a second later. On an actual 854 x 480 screen (no "upscaling"), with 30 or 60 full frames per second, the picture is pretty sweet.
I tried out "Pokken Tournament." How detailed is the title screen? I was noticing that it looked nice. They only let you pick about four of the Pokemon. I was Charizard (humongous), and the CPU was Lucario. Just to see Charizard on the screen, I think the camera was really zoomed out. I don't even know how I won, since it felt a little like button mashing. For the second round, I remembered how pressing two buttons lets you throw the other player (maybe B + Y). Lucario kept "turtling" with his force shield thingy (probably not the right words). Charizard picked him up, tossed him in the air, and let out a stream of fire. It was pretty crazy. I've probably played ZERO hours of the Pokemon RPG titles on all the versions of Game Boy, but I could almost see buying that "Pokken Tournament" as a fighting game, since it wouldn't be as graphic as "Mortal Combat" or as pornographic as "Street Fighter 5." I've probably played at least SOME form of Pokemon on possibly the N64 or the GameCube. I remember fighting my little brother in a colosseum, and then there was the weird game that lets you take pictures as you kind of ride a cart or a roller coaster through a zoo.
I played some of the new "Mario Tennis" game. It's hard to tell what kind of crazy shots they've added this time. When I play a tennis game, I'm usually just looking for a way to hit slices, top spin shots, lobs, smashes, or drop shots. Anything beyond that is too complicated. Somehow, if you double-tap a button, it becomes a "jump shot" (like in basketball?), where the trail turns orange or red with an electric effect. I guess the ball moves faster and I scored a few points that way. My player was Mario. The CPU was Waluigi (my choice). I picked "novice" difficulty and beat him pretty easily (4-1, 0-4 in two games). It seemed like the computer was moving Mario to the ball without my help. I couldn't really figure out a strategy in a two game set. If he hit the ball to my right, I'd just aim a shot to the left. A few times, I hit "body shots" right at him. I'm not sure about that game or if it could get old quickly. The original "Mario Tennis" from N64 is still a classic in my eyes, although it's hard for me to play from the background court, and the computer rarely beats me, except on the highest difficulty. Even if they just remastered that into HD, I'd probably be excited.
"Yoshi's Wooly World" is a quirky game. I couldn't really figure it out. One button was jump. One button did a "ground pound." One button controlled his tongue, unless you had already pulled something into your mouth (then he spit it back out). I picked "stage two" and regular difficulty for "experienced" players. It just looked like a maze where I got down to the bottom, and then didn't know how to escape. There's a room with pinball flippers, and yarn mice or rats keep coming out of pipes, but you can't get to the pipes (they're under a low platform). One neat thing was how you went through doors, and it would take you to a different perspective from that other side of a wall or fence. I've seen Mario games use that mechanic, where you can flip to the back of a fence, but the camera didn't adjust to keep you in the foreground.
I mean, they're not AWFUL games. Out of that selection, I would probably want to try "Pokken Tournament" the most. The other two could be rentals. It's just sad how few Wii U systems they've sold since 2012. The numbers are worldwide, right? Out of 13 million, how many of those were in the United States? I'm not sure what visuals look like on PS4 or XBox One, but I thought the graphics were really good for not trying to be "photorealistic." Sometimes, even good still pictures don't resemble what you'd see in real life.
I'm pretty optimistic about the new system. I just wonder when I can afford to buy a Wii U!! How many games am I "missing" on that console? I'd still have to play the HD version of "Wind Waker." I've got the two big name Mario platform games. For crying out loud, I only started the first few areas of "Super Mario Galaxy" on the Wii, and that's supposed to be a masterpiece.
Better be going for now.
