: I'll just add this... if you get a Wii U and
: if you're a fan of the classic Mario games
: like the original or SMB 3 or Super Mario
: World, I'd strongly recommend Super Mario
: Maker. If you don't already know about this
: game, look up some videos. Nothing better
: than a game that plays like Mario but allows
: YOU to make levels and allows you to play
: the levels of others who have uploaded some.
: :-)
Well, as of 7:11 tonight, I picked up the last copy at a sort of nearby Target ("Super Mario Maker"). For some reason, every Toys R Us I went to had either dented boxes, or this weird thing with the top flap (like a sliver of the edge got cut and was sticking up like alfalfa). Best Buy wraps some of them in those anti-theft devices (circle with horizontal and vertical strings), which leaves marks on the sides of the box. Target was "just right" at most of the stores (locked inside a case where you could at least see through the front).
I even drove about 70 miles to what's supposed to be the biggest Target store on the East Coast. From the outside, it looks impressive. I couldn't figure out how to get into the parking area, since there's both a lot and kind of a covered area (not really a parking "deck" or a garage, because it's just that one level). You walk past all of that, inside a door, up either stairs or an escalator. There's the "cafe" area, probably with Sawbucks ($5 or more for coffee, which tastes bitter to me?). Then it's kind of like any other Target from the inside. I'm not sure why that was kind of disappointing (should it NOT look like any other Target that exists?) I've seen some pretty large format stores, and this one was probably bigger, but it felt like that just meant more of each section or aisle as compared to the smaller cousins.
I was wondering which amiibo work with "Super Mario Maker." Is it only the 8-bit style courses that can let you change "costumes," or look like some of the amiibo? I saw Resetti from "Animal Crossing" in one level that was part of a live stream. I've seen people try to make a Donkey Kong level with the DK costume as the sprite. Did Sega let them put Sonic in there? Did Capcom allow Mega Man?
One of the bigger Best Buy stores had the restocked Smash Bros. and gold Mario amiibo actually on the sales floor. That was the first time I remember seeing Lucina, Ness, and Pit. I can't imagine them doing much outside of "SSB," since they haven't starred in a recent solo game. They're so amazingly detailed that you almost want to collect ALL of them. Ness might not be that challenging to include all of the details, though .
With the "classic" Mario games, is it me, or are the levels really short? I guess, over time, I got used to the levels with checkpoints and feeling like there was more to explore. By short, I mean that a few of the early stages from "Super Mario Bros. 3" feel like you're doing a "speed run" even without holding the run button. Maybe some of them are "speed runs," because you're dodging the spinies that Lakitu throws, or that weird sun that starts swooping down. Those stages might be shorter than parts of "Super Mario Bros. 2"!
