I had the #2 pick in an eight team league (we're contracting from 10 teams in 2015). That kind of makes sense, because I had finished "9th" last season. What happened was, I had a winning record (7-6). In fact, if I had just beaten the eventual champion in week 13, I would have made the semifinals. I don't think I would've won the division (an 8-5 team did it, though) because overall points were used to break ties (I probably ranked #7 in points). During the two "consolation" weeks, that guy David Johnson had a career game against the Eagles, and my guys were powerless to make up the difference. I think I still scored the most fantasy points of ANY team in our league from weeks 14-17 (a VERY "late bloomer").
It just wasn't a good year for injuries in 2015, or I felt forced into taking certain guys. Matt Forte was the best "RB1" left in the first round. I gobbled him up, but he was only the RB8 in the final rankings last season. He'd probably be lower if Le'Veon Bell didn't get suspended plus shred his knee, if Jamaal Charles kept playing, etc. His 159 fantasy points worked out to less than 10 per week, and he missed a few games. Then, is there a bigger TD machine than Dez Bryant? It turns out, all it takes is to break a bone in your foot, plus all the Tony Romo drama, and he wasn't worth a second round pick. Third, I'm pretty sure I picked up Alshon Jeffery, who was also a bust.
Basically, if I could avoid three "busts" in the first three picks this year, maybe I'd stand a chance?
Antonio Brown disappeared right away. That was predictable. I remember when he was a third or fourth round "steal" in 2014. Now, everybody knows his capabilities. Odell Beckham, Jr. went undrafted for us in 2014, and he missed some games that year. I was between Odell and Adrian Peterson. Peterson seems to have a "floor" of 10 rushing TDs when he plays a full season. The Vikings also lost Teddy Bridgewater, so you'd figure they'll focus on the running game. Odell seems to have a "floor" of 1,300 receiving yards and maybe 13 TDs. To me, it was kind of even, or more "upside" to Odell. Plus, I'm a Giants' fan. I wanted to save picks 15 and 18 to double up on the best available RBs.
Somehow, Devonta Freeman was still there when my turn came again (I have three QBs listed in the top 14 picks). Are you serious? He was the only RB not named Adrian Peterson to surpass 200 fantasy points last year. He had over 62% of the team's rush attempts in 2015. I think he was 5th in the league (at rush attempts), and one of only seven 1,000 yard rushers. When you add his receiving numbers, he was at 1,639 total yards. I thought I'd be making harder decisions!
Doug Martin was a "bust" for me a few seasons ago, when I wanted to use him as my flex (third best RB, after drafting Jamaal Charles and Eddie Lacy). In 2015, he ranked as the RB3 of the whole league and the 9th best player eligible for the "flex" position. His total yards look like they topped 1,600 also. That means, if he plays 16 games, you're getting 100 yards each week. He carries the ball a ton, on a team that was #5 in the league at running it last year, with 4.8 yards/carry, ... It's like that ESPN segment called "C'Mon Man!"
I knew there would be a long wait until the next pick, and I wanted an "elite" QB, after I muddled through Eli, "Matty Ice," and "The Red Rifle" last year. Rifle/Andy Dalton was on pace for a good season, but he broke his thumb trying to tackle a Steelers' LB who intercepted him. How about Drew Brees? He's roughly my age (a little older, actually). What did he do last year? Number two in completions. Number two in pass attempts. Number one in total passing yards. Tied for number five in TDs. Tied for 14th at throwing interceptions, which was actually unusual for his career as a whole. I think 11 bad passes out of 627 attempts is acceptable (1.75% intercepted). Then, a 32:11 TD:INT ratio looks awesome also. If I had missed out on him, I was going to reach for Carson Palmer.
I probably don't remember exact round by round picks after that (I only wrote down what position everyone chose, for future analysis and predicting a draft strategy).
Here are my "regular" players:
Matthew Stafford
2015: QB9, 2016: ESPN "QB16"
He's been another guy where I might overlook him because it's the Lions. What I see in his numbers are how the passing yards are dropping (he had an unrealistic 5,000+ not that long ago), but when he was doing all that, he might only have 25 TDs, which looked like too much work for limited scores. As of last year, I think he topped 30 TD passes and limited his picks. That's what I'd look for in a "backup" level QB.
Jeremy Hill
2015 RB14, 2016: ESPN "RB18"
The things I noticed with him were 3.6 yards per carry (Yikes!), but he may have gotten several carries with less than four yards to gain, since he scored 11 rushing TDs. Those came in bunches, meaning a "boom or bust" effect.
Frank Gore
2015 RB12, 2016: ESPN "RB27"
I know he's getting older. His decline has been gradual, though. Somehow, 16 different Colts players were running the ball in 2015, but Gore was the only one to do it at least 65% of the time, and the only player to record a rushing TD. That's more peace of mind than when a team keeps rotating three different backs into the game. I'd rather have this guy on my bench than have him scoring points against me.
Charles Sims
2015: RB22, 2016: ESPN "RB39"
In the current NFL, you have to take into account more than the RBs who are good runners. There are a few like this guy who can finish as the #2 receiver on the whole team. Plus, if anything did happen to Doug Martin, here is his backup, without needing a higher waiver priority.
Brandon Marshall
2015: WR3, 2016: ESPN "WR9"
As far as I can tell, he's healthy (with a "sore hip" on the injury report), has been a 1,100 yards 10 TDs kind of guy for most of his career, and the Jets finally got Ryan Fitzpatrick to sign another contract. How are ESPN devaluing a guy who just had an amazing year? How did he slip so far in our family draft? The one thing I didn't research was the Jets' schedule, and they usually like to run (yet they let Chris Ivory escape to the Jaguars?).
Keenan Allen
2015: WR46, 2016: ESPN "WR16"
You might look at those numbers and wonder if ESPN are overrating this guy. The thing is, he only got to play part of eight games last season, and his injury was to his kidney. That sounds painful, but hopefully not life-threatening, and it shouldn't affect his leg or arm joints. Before the injury, he was sometimes catching FIFTEEN balls in a single game!
Michael Crabtree
2015: WR19, 2016: ESPN "WR35"
In past drafts, I would wonder why some people chose this guy. Plus, I'm a Chiefs' fan. I had to be "rational" and unbiased to see how they're definitely "targeting" him (146 times last season), and he converted that into over 900 yards and 9 TDs. Amari Cooper might have a better season and be the #1 guy for the Raiders (fewer fantasy points than Crabtree last year, though), but I don't want this guy on another roster beating me.
Jeremy Maclin
2015: WR17, 2016: ESPN "WR21"
This guy slid down to the 15th round! I know he may not be exciting to own, but it does look like they throw his way almost eight times a game, and he topped 1,000 yards last season. See the "hoarding" principle from other player descriptions.
Coby Fleener
2015: TE21, 2016: ESPN "TE6"
This was the one spot where I waited just a pick too long and had to "settle" for a guy who was "risky." Our league is known to overvalue the TE spot (I see four of them within the first 26 picks). When you think about it, only three or four guys look to be good this year, and not all of them are "exciting" to own. Gronkowski won't have Brady for a full 16 games. Jordan Reed might have a 2 TD game or miss a start. Greg Olsen is a very "Steady Eddie," which was why I used to pick him (when we waited to the 5th round or beyond to go TE-crazy). Delanie Walker deserves consideration, because he was targeted 133 times last season, catching 94 of those balls. Other than him, the passing options are named Rishard Matthews and Tajae Sharp. Derrick Henry is a Heisman RB playing his first year. DeMarco (Mur-ray!) is becoming a "journeyman" RB, trying to improve a vanilla rush offense that averaged 4.0 yards per carry last year (Mariota probably did the most to keep it at 4.0).
Anyway, Coby Fleener switches to the Saints, who are a prolific passing offense, and keep making tight ends into top 10 players (at least at that position).
Texans D/ST
2015: D/ST6, 2016: ESPN "D/ST5"
It would be cool to live near Houston one day. That doesn't mean they'd make a good fantasy defense. They were slow starters when I drafted them last season, but thanks to the bad teams in their division (Jaguars and Titans), they climbed the ranks to finish the season strong. I like when you don't have to fight someone else on the waiver wire for a defense that has a good matchup in weeks 14-17.
Chiefs D/ST
2015: D/ST2, 2016: ESPN "D/ST6"
Last season, in a 10 team league, I TRIPLED UP on defense (post-draft). Why be forced to throw a good one away when their bye week comes? My main concern here would be Justin Houston. The secondary looks amazing, and they only allowed 17.9 points per game last season. It could come down to the "strength of schedule."
Justin Tucker
2015: K8, 2016: ESPN "K4"
He's kind of become my guy. I don't really know, because nobody else has picked him ! One year, he got me at least 20 points in a single playoff week, but I was actually blowing my uncle out already. He was just the "cherry" in a week of something like 173 fantasy points (19.22 per starting position). The Ravens struggled last year to keep offensive guys in the lineup (Justin Forsett!!!). I think that might have made his FG attempts longer (only 4/10 from at least 50 yards away). Otherwise, he's good from the other distances, and just needed more PAT attempts.
Man, it's already 8:15 local time! I haven't seen the other lineups fully put together, but I'm pretty happy with my overall depth. Not that I'm wishing for injuries, but it looks like we could absorb some of those. I also took almost ZERO risk on guys who are already guaranteed to miss time: "Tawm" Brady (suspension, and, you know, it's the Patriots), Le'Veon Bell (suspension), Jamaal Charles (not recovered from his ACL yet), Tyler Eifert (nagging ankle problem), ...
