My question doesn't really feel like it's about the Wii U. It's a combination of a bunch of things. One is how I haven't been able to find a job since the Wii U released, or I might have it by now. In the meantime, I'm just trying to "hoard" the popular games in disc format before companies decide to stop releasing discs (I've always liked the artwork and having a physical instruction manual). That ends up costing more with credit card interest. There's also "Disney Infinity" that I was trying to collect along with Wii U games, but since I've gotten more OCD over time, I've planned out what order to try and buy things.
Here's an example. I wanted "Mario Kart 8" to be the 8th game I buy for Wii U (can you see the "logic"?). OK. Around this time last year, or maybe two years ago, that was as simple as buying the disc. Actually, I think it only released at the end of May in 2014, so that would mean less than two years ago. Around that time, they were also selling the Wii U bundle that came with "Super Mario 3D World" and "Nintendoland." That would be fine or fit with my OCD, because I would view "3D World" as the 9th game in the collection. Three squared is the number nine, but I realize that's only two dimensions. Somehow it was making sense, though (3 + 3 + 3 = 9?). "Nintendoland" was a launch game, and the number 10 is pretty significant in our counting system.
Well, what changed since then is that it's hard to find the bundle with those two games anywhere (or for retail price). Towards the end, I wonder if the games were also turned into digital files on the console. Instead of that two game bundle, they mainly offer a bundle with a "digital copy" of "Mario Kart 8." I'm not sure I'd want to buy the exclusive "Super Mario Maker" bundle from Wal*Mart instead. Plus, I was saving "Super Mario Maker" to be the 12th or 13th game.
Basically, I'm the obstacle in completing that collection , through struggling to find work, and then wanting to buy in a certain order when the actual stock keeps making that harder to accomplish.
Do you know what else just happened maybe a week or two ago? Disney made a business decision to pull the rug out from under their "Infinity" game. I had been collecting those figures (they're considered "toys to life") up to a certain point where I had about eight or nine more to go. What held me up? Well, I wanted the physical disc for the game to be the 11th member of a Wii U collection. I haven't bought the starter pack from "Infinity 2.0" yet, so that was going to be the Wii U version (and then 3.0 on Playstation 4). That pack (in the Marvel version) comes with Iron Man, Black Widow, and Thor. I managed to collect 27 other figures in such a way that I have 19 male characters and eight females. I actually wanted Black Widow (a spider) to be the 8th woman, but it's also worked out to where I think she's going to be either the 8th character I collect from 2.0, the 8th Marvel character, or something along those lines. Thor should be the 30th character overall (or the Thor-tieth, if you will). Iron Man is kind of cool (he's a jerk to women, though), so I wanted him to be the 20th male character, and #7 from either Marvel or from the 2.0 characters.
Anyway, with "Infinity" apparently going out of business, I'm seeing that as almost "forcing my hand." I could've bought the "Mario Kart 8" disc by now. Then I held off, and it became the weird situation where it's a digital game when you buy the Wii U bundle. What would happen if you had two copies of the game? Could you delete the digital version? Would it say you already own this game and not let you play from the disc? I could find out if I just owned a Wii U by now and had money to waste on double purchasing a game. I know of one store that still has "Nintendoland" in disc format. With "3D World," they unfortunately ruined the cover art by making it a Nintendo Selects title. I may know one place that still has the original artwork (if they didn't clear out that stock). If I got that far into collecting the games, I could resume with "Infinity" before it all disappears. Another weird thing is how I don't really like to buy important things in June (6th month of the year).
Thinking about "Infinity" itself, it's hard to tell where they might have taken some wrong turns. I really like the concept of the game. Ideally, you could put almost any character into any existing Disney world (now including Marvel and "Star Wars," after buying those franchises), with items and enemies from other franchises all mashed up together. They didn't quite achieve that with the first game. There are worlds that the programmers built (called "play sets"), but only characters from that franchise can go there. Rapunzel didn't get her own play set (or Wreck-It-Ralph, or Anna and Elsa, ...). There was a lot of emphasis on YOU as the gamer, to invest the time and hours (plus some money to buy new characters and item/power up discs) earning extra content inside the game. You could use all that stuff to build your own world and make up whatever kind of game came to mind. Personally, I'm still trying to earn the final pieces of Cinderella's castle in this lottery type of game. I have the weirdest feeling it's programmed to be the last thing you can win.
The first game was released on the Wii, and I would be interested to see those sales numbers. It may have sold best on the Wii, despite how the Wii version has no online features and other things seem limited by the hardware (no HD textures, smaller play sets, only four bosses per world that you build, ...). They did release a starter pack for Wii U with the physical game, and a way to download the digital copy if you owned the version on Wii (otherwise, you'd get duplicates of the characters and the wireless base).
With all the figures (that may have been the expensive part, causing losses), I know what the fans and players who took the time to comment on blogs were saying: Ariel ("The Little Mermaid"), Belle, the Beast, Simba, Darkwing Duck, Nemo, ... In some of those cases, there may have been programming issues. Like, for Ariel, how would she walk? Or did she need to swim? I forget the plot of the movie now, but didn't she have a human form at some point? With Nemo, it would be how he could exist out of water, although I guess they figured it out, because he's going to be one of the last characters to release. With Simba, he would usually walk on four legs. There were issues with him firing a blaster, driving a car, or sitting on some other animal without it looking crude or pornographic.
So, instead of all those characters, what was getting released? In the first game, I know they released a Lone Ranger set (didn't really excite me). They only made a "Sorcerer's Apprentice" Mickey, until version 3.0, where he looks like the character you'd expect to see at a theme park. The "Cars" characters can't do a bunch of the things that were supposed to be the reasons why they held off on Simba. In 2.0, I think the Disney roster was also a bit disappointing. There's Merida (I think she won a fan poll, though), a gray thing called Stitch, Donald Duck (not bad, but no Goofy?), Tinker Bell, Maleficent (a villain?), plus Aladdin and Jasmine. By the time of 3.0, I can only think of Mickey, Minnie, Sam Flynn, Quorra ("KOR-uh"), Olaf the snowman, Mulan, and a bunch of animated characters (emotions from "Inside Out," animals from "Zootopia," a kid from "The Good Dinosaur"). The rest is focused on "Star Wars" and they did a pretty big expansion of Marvel, but it felt like those were the niche characters who keep popping up in the newer movies (something or someone called "Vision," Black Panther, Ant-Man, a second Spider-Man [wearing a black suit], a second Captain America, a second Iron Man, or just a big suit that looks like him, Ultron [villain], ...).
Well, I need to proofread and feed my cat soon. Just had that odd question to ask/answer.
