Do you have something like a fitbit? If not, get one when you feel better. Don't try for the mythical 10,000 steps a day. You most likely won't even come close & you'll just get discouraged and quit. (I did the 1st few times I used one.)
Just let it track your normal activities for a few days & see what your "normal" average is. Then set a goal for about 500 steps more. Once that gets relatively easy, add another 500. And just keep it up.
When I started I was only averaging around 2500 steps a day. Pathetic, huh? I'm now up to averaging around 7000 (although I have broken the 10,000 zone a time or two). My absolutely minimum is 6500 and if that means I'm marching around the living room at 11:55pm to get there, so be it!!! But usually I'm landing somehwere between 7000 and 8000.
I need to go on & bump my minimum up to 7000 but all the mowing has played heck on my numbers. Even though I get a heck of a workout on that thing, it's not reflected in my daily steps so on days when I do a lot of mowing, I'm exhausted and getting that 6500 minimum is a struggle.
Using a food tracker also helps. I use the free My Fitness Pal app to log every single bite that goes into my mouth. I allow myself 1400 calories a day (but only 105 grams of carbs and 54 grams of fat because I'm also fighting pre-diabetes and high cholesterol). And I do my best to stick that that. The calorie part is usually the easiest - trying to keep both the carbs & fat/cholesterol down is a booger!!! All the low carb diets tell you to eat meat & eggs. And all the low fat diets tell you to eat complex carbohydrates. AAAARRRRGGHHHH!
p.s. I have my 32 oz tumbler of hot tea every morning. Usually with a teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of heavy cream. But that goes into the log & counts towards my daily totals. I'll give up a lot of other things before I'll give up that!!
