Tinseltown using the new Mill building,,,,,,how does that work?

Tinseltown was renting the old Lascelles bank building for their pop up bar and now they are using the Mill,,,,,,how is it possible to rent that place at the prices they charge and make any money selling a few drinks and finger foods?

Is the Tinseltown pop up for charity? Are they donating the building to her or,,,,are they charging her the same as they would anyone else who wants to rent the place? I sure hope this new building and our tax dollars that helped fund it aren't being used for private business opportunities. I also don't understand how the bar inside the place isn't generating money for the city, but instead was given to this same lady for her to sell her own drinks out of the building to make money,,,,did they take bids from other bars or restaurants that have a liquor license to step into this brand new place to sell alcohol and have this great opportunity to make money from party bookings,,,,receptions and other events?

It’s my understanding that she doesn’t pay rent but pays a share of the bar bill to the city. I think that number is20% but can’t confirm that number.

Very few events have been held there other than a couple of fund raisers for political people and a cross dresser show that I hear was a riot . It will be successful in time. Just have to hope the city isn’t giving up too much .

Wait a minute,,,,,hold the hell up for a sec. Are you telling me that the city is supplying her with a brand new modern freshly renovated building that she has to pay ZERO rental fees for and are allowing her to throw these pop up bar events and she could be raking in $2000.00 a night,,,,and she only has to hand over 200 measly bucks back to the city in return????

No way no how can this be right! No city officials or council would allow this. She is using the city's electric, heating or air conditioning, all utilities,,,,water etc. and it's costing her only 20% of what she tells them she's made for the night? The residents of this town are paying those utility bills and the upkeep on this building with our tax dollars, who in the HELL gets this kind of sweetheart deal, I know Joe Blow off the damned street sure wouldn't!

This sure seems like a lot of risk with very little reward for the city,,,,or we the taxpayers who really own this building. What about the wear and tear on the building alone,,,,,,this ridiculous 20% couldn't even come close to covering that and all the utilities.

The entire concept of this renovation and investment we put into this building was to make money for the city, just like our cinema is finally doing under it's new management. This building or investment was not intended for a private business or person to supplement their income. This is the city's investment and the city's opportunity to generate a little money and get a return on that investment. The damned city should be hiring its own employees to work these events and to operate this bar and KEEP THE PROFITS IN THE CITY'S POCKETS! There are people who would gladly work these events just for the opportunity of the tips alone.

I am pissed off about this bait and switch situation and the tax paying residents should be too. The ONLY reason people aren't lining up to call for the heads of the people responsible for allowing this situation is because they just aren't aware of it,,,,,,,,,,,,YET!

Sorry for the math, 20% being $400 if the take for the night is $2000.00,,,,,. One more thing, is this the same woman that is in charge of running and booking this entire building? Nothing about this situation seems right,,,,,nothing.

Hello everyone my first comment here! I'm going to admit I was told I had to come to this site to read what's being said about the old church building now called the mill. I wish someone from the city council or the mayor's office would come here to clarify this situation. I sure hope what I'm reading about how this place is being ran is not true. I would hate to think my tax dollars are being used to provide a private citizen a place to operate a business inside of a building owned by the city and the taxpayers. It was my understanding that this new place would be used for concerts, weddings, receptions, and reunions and other large events and the rentals would be a return on the investment made to make this possible.

This big bar room and the patio should be ran just like any other business venture and for the profits going strictly to the city and nobody else. If this bar room and area is being used by anyone there should be a rental fee along with a rental agreement. All rentals out of that building should be made accessible to the public for accountability and transparency so we the taxpayers know this place is being ran and used properly. The records on this property should be an open book, if not how does the public know their tax dollars aren't being abused by handing over these rental spaces without the proper rental agreements and prices. Why would the city pass up such an opportunity to make this kind of revenue on alcohol sales and just give that opportunity to someone else? There are generous profits to be made on the sale of alcoholic beverages. If this situation turns out to true and is being allowed, I would like to know what procedures were followed that allowed it in the first place. Was this situation announced, did the city make it public knowledge that even though this bar area was renovated and built, the city didn't want any part of it? Did they take bids on this bar space and compare them to negotiate the best deal for the city? Did they negotiate and go with the best bid and negotiate a time frame for the lease of the bar?

This is a newly renovated, very costly investment for the city. The building is beautiful and will be a huge draw once the word spreads. Eventually the booking calendar will be filled with events of all kinds, those bookings will be accompanied with many guests all looking for full bar service, with money to spend in their pockets for the entire evening. We all know how those wedding receptions are, drink-dance-drink some more. It not only puzzles me, but it makes me very suspicious why we are facing this situation. How, when and why was it decided to give this money making opportunity to a private citizen/business owner without the public being notified of this opportunity? Why were other businesses and citizens not given the chance to bid on this opportunity? But the biggest question of all is, why did the city not take advantage of this opportunity to get a return on our investment? Why hand if off to anyone at all? It sure wasn't a result of budget issues, or not having the funds to hire bartenders or being able to afford the necessary insurances needed, not with the grants and monies that were being invested to make this idea turned into a reality.

There are so many unanswered questions about this situation, and someone sure needs to clear these questions up to the public.

Wouldn’t it be wiser just to go into the mayors office and ask for details? He’s got an open door from what I see..

Contracts can be gotten through a FOIA request as well. As for bar operations , I would hope the city doesn’t go down that road . As the operator the would be first named in a DUI wrongful death suit and that could cost a fortune.

My question is this!!! How did this person get a liquor license to start with? Isn't there a limited number of licenses the city allows to be had in the city limits to start with?

That’s easy. She transferred her license from Tinsel Town. The limits on liquor licenses can be changed at any time.

If my memory serves me I believe that the mayor is the liquor commissioner. He is the only one who can issue a license within Granite City, so it's his sole decision who is allowed to have one or not. If I'm wrong, let me know.

Looking at the city ordinances, yes, the mayor is the liquor commissioner. However, ordinances limit the number of licenses he can grant. So technically he can't grant more than that without an amendment to the ordinance.

I think this comes down to the owner of Tinsel Town now operates the bar in the Mill and the city gets a piece of those sales. I looked for the contract on the city web site but didn't find anything.

I'm sure there is an explanation. I will hope someone can clarify this.

According to the report, The Mill was profitable (assuming for the city) to the sum of $200k last year.

The Theater lost $236k.

Since the Mill wasn’t opened last year, I’m not sure where those numbers come from.

There are rumors going around that there won't be a question answered on this subject. I'm hearing this is very touchy subject for all involved. Oh if those council walls could talk. Especially the walls in those closed sessions. I wonder if the kettle is whistling yet.

Not a chance and neither will anyone else, and that could be exactly what they are counting on. It's being rumored that this subject is taboo and basically has an unspoken gag order all over it. Not a soul who has at least fifty percent functioning brain cells will touch this with a ten-foot pole. Say you FOIA the information and say all the suspected 'funny business' is right there in black and white, what are you going to do with it? First off, it's also a matter of public record who is doing the FOIA request. Once you filled out the appropriate paperwork, the panic could begin.

Wait, let me back up. First, possibly would come the indignance along with the emotional response from the suspected 'funny business players'. Who would have the audacity to request this documentation???? Who are they? What do they know? Then the panic might set in.

They would know immediately if this was an inside spectator to any hijinks. Surely no one present during certain discussions, processes, etc. would need the documentation for any other reason than exposing possible 'funny business'. No one within the walls of our city hall would dare open themselves up to the ridicule and thinly veiled punishment that could follow. You know, no good deed goes unpunished, regardless how steeped in morality it might be. Integrity really no longer has a place in our government, even at the city level.

Indignance and anger could assume their place at bat, panic is on deck. In my imagination I hear, "How dare any Tom, Dick or Harriet come in here and start asking questions, trying to figure things out. We have to nip this in the bud." I imagine the request could be denied under any number of circumstances, even if only for delay tactics. I imagine lots of scrambling and lots of whispered conversations behind closed doors and the city attorney's number would soon be on speed dial.

I could prattle on, but I won't.

The first question that should be asked in this situation is, is the young lady who was hired to manage "The Mill" responsible for managing all aspects of the venue and all its rentals? Second question, how or who, if anyone, is she related to (family or friend) within the administration? And is she an actual employee of Granite City or is she considered an outside contractor? I've heard she already owns her own business, so I think this is an important question. If under contract as an independent contractor, would her contract be a matter of public information and subject to any FOIA request?

I'll just leave this here for the time being. Everything else can be scrutinized after these questions can be answered. Even the most obtuse and complacent citizens of our town have to be questioning this business arrangement.

Marshall, you summed it up perfectly. Most people want to know but don’t want dirty hands .

I did find out she’s an independent contractor with no city salary. She shares the bar profits and rental fees with the city. She basically moved her former bar into the new center and pays no rent. The terms of the contract are public knowledge. I was also told Elliot Davis may come to town shortly after Christmas.

It appears that ticket sales for the end of the month for Tinseltown were not in high demand as much as anticipated,,,,,,it's being shared all over facebook that they have plenty of room for walk-ins tonight. I guess the royal family of G.C. can only fill so many seats in one season.

So are we talking the former Tinsel Town location or the new location in the old church? The only thing I heard that "flopped" at the new place was one of the shows where men dress up as women. That really doesn't surprise me in this community.

We would be talking about its new location inside of the old church that the city (our tax dollars) is paying the bills for. The very same location that Elliot Davis is rumored to be very interested in. He has to have a variety of questions he wants to hear the answers to, because if there were ever a story to end in his famous "because you paid for it" or you will continue to pay for it,,,,,this would be it!

My guess it was done legally. I know the city attorney and trust me, he wouldn't let the city do anything illegally.

The questions Davis would ask, if he really comes here, would be who got the lease deal and what does each party get from the contract.

I tried to find the contract in the minutes of the city council meeting but couldn't and Mrs. O got tired of me looking for it.

Another huge opportunity for the city to make money from the new Mill building handed to local business owner. Why isn't the city taking advantage of a town full of bar hopping drinkers? Instead the opportunity is handed off to Tinseltown owner to make some big bank at the taxpayers expense. We're paying for her building, utilities and she sits back and rakes in the profits. I wonder how much we're paying for security for the night keeping unruly drunken crowds under control in that new place. This woman has to be related to someone to get this kind of deal handed to her.

Well apparently, it didn't interest Elliot enough to come to our fair city to investigate. Sometimes rumors are more of interest than facts.

It seems to be the best path to the truth would be a simple call to the mayor. From what I've seen, he doesn't hide from anyone or anything which is great.
