Not that I would ever defend President Biden but strict military protocol does not include the CIC to use a hand salute at a military funeral or for that matter any time.
While most Presidents do it as a phot op, it's not much more than political theater. Only military members in uniform are actually obligated to salute.
Proper protocol for civilians at the passing of a flag draped coffin is to stand with your right hand over your heart with head bowed facing the casket until after it passes.
