I don't want a president who speaks like me.
I want to know that we have our best and brightest occupying the White House. I want a president who is literate and articulate in history, law, and governance. I want a president who lifts us up to something better....and is not a result of the worst of who we are, feeding on our hatreds and fears.
So yeah, that ability to construct a sentence is very important. It's okay if my peers speak like me, but my leaders should inspire me to speak better. My leaders should inspire me to be something better than I am now, or at least let me know I have a part in helping make it better.
