Why stop at just 25 years ago? When did Trattle's, Carps, Leaders, etc., etc., etc. close in downtown Granite, replaced by all the big box in that suburban mess that took over in the area of the photo you've kindly posted (and now it, too, is dying)? Gotta save some bucks and shop at Walmart...so now that's the only place in town to shop...and then people complain because so much is manufactured on the other side of the planet by cheap labor...which shut down all the stuff manufactured or produced in the USA. How many of you know that Washington Avenue garment district in St. Louis was second only to New York City's garment industry...? All gone in St. Louis (well, LeVine Hats and a bridal place is still there)...thanks to people eager to save bucks by buying cheap goods. And that's just retail clothing and textiles. How about A.O. Smith, Carter Carburetor, Union Starch, Ford and Chevy...etc. etc. etc. ...? If I'm gonna reminisce about what used to be I'll reminisce back to a little more than 50 years ago...because I can remember what life was like then, what Granite was like then and what a great town it was. 25 years ago the handwriting was already on the wall.
