We will be gathering at the Chouteau Township Building, 906 Thorngate in Mitchell, on Tuesday, June 6th at 5:30 pm
Please come, this is an old town get together and everyone is welcome.
Seventy three years ago on June 6, 1944, American soldiers, airmen and sailors along with our allies, invaded a fifty mile stretch of beaches along the coast of Normandy in France. I would like to share with you some facts about D Day.
The largest invasion in the history of the world was postponed by one day because of bad weather. Extremely high winds and seas caused our brave troops to remain hunkered down for twenty four hours awaiting the inevitable battle. They remained courageous and undeterred.
Four thousand allied troops lost their lives and one thousand more wounded or missing. This was the turning point in World War II as our fearless troops pushed the Nazis all the way back to Germany. A high price to pay. The patriotism and pride of these young men allowed them to push forward with little thought of their own personal safety. No more admirable group of soldiers has the world ever seen.
Had they not been successful, we can only imagine what Europe today, and even North America, would look like under the grasp of the Nazis. The eyes of the world were upon them.
This is a personal issue to me, as my late husband and brother both fought in World War II. I feel it is the responsibility of my generation to continue to honor, remind and educate those who did not live through these times, of the sacrifice and bravery of these men. The freedoms we enjoy today are a result of the patriotism of our Greatest Generation. Keep them, those that have passed and their families in your prayers and remember to thank them for their service
