My daughter asked me to pick up my Granddaughter from the bus stop today. I had only done this one other time, so my Granddaughter is not use to seeing me or my car there waiting.

As I am waiting, I see the bus slowly approaching so I get out of my car and walk a few steps closer as the bus is stopping. I watch as my Granddaughter's eyes look straight into mine from the distance and I see the smile come across her face. I hear her saying as she is walking past the bus driver..."it's my Grandma!".

With her tousled braids blowing straight backwards in the wind, she is proudly wearing her princess crown made out of construction paper, colored brightly with crayons. She is carrying her poster full of carefully glued, cut out pictures and can barely wait for me to get her into her car seat as she is trying to show me her creations from the day.

As we are driving away from the bus stop, she smiles as she looks back at the school bus pulling away and says to me "I had the funnest and the bestest day at school today Grandma!"

"We colored pictures and made posters. We got to make crowns and I got to use the stapler! My teacher gave me two special pencils and do you know what else Grandma? We got to make Friendship Soup! I love school Grandma."

She asked me if I wanted to wear her princess crown for a while and I proudly accepted the offer for the drive home.

To see your grandchild explain her school day with such excitement, and to hear her talk about her teacher with such fondness is priceless.

So, today I was a rock star in my granddaughter's eyes, only because it was me waiting at the bus stop for a change instead of her mommy. I'll change that to a Queen Rock Star, since I got the crown for the ride home.

It is very apparent that Maryville school and staff are doing many things right to make this kind of an impact on a child.

    Thank you!
