It's a no win situation for the US. We're only getting involved because (as usual), the damned Europeans only wring their hands and say 'Somebody needs to do something". The US (being the worlds biggest sucker ) will rush in to "save the day".Yes it's a sad situation, but sometimes the best thing to do it to stay out of it. I think Putin is going to regret getting involved down the road.
