On Tuesday, January 20th, IL Dept of Transportation will be closing I-270, in both the eastbound and westbound directions, from IL 3 to Riverview Blvd. in Missouri. The interstate will be closed starting at 10:00 a.m. and re-opened at approximately 12:00 noon. The closure is required to allow for the demolition of the eastbound Chain of Rocks Canal Truss bridge. Explosives will be used to drop the bridge and that will occur at 10:15. After the blast, inspectors will be walking over the new bridge to check for any debris or damage. Once this has been completed, I-270 will be re-opened.

The public will be allowed onto the Old Rte 66 Canal bridge to view the demolition. As of now, there are no designated parking areas, so you will need to get permission to park on private property or have someone drop you off on Chain of Rocks road and walk up onto the bridge. I will post the official Press Release tomorrow as soon as all plans are completed.

This will be the first of 3 blasts. The next blast will occur on February 3 and that will drop the westbound canal bridge. The last section over on the east side of the levee will come down on February 17.

We will have message boards out alerting traffic to take other routes of travel. This closure will have traffic backed up for several miles so please share this with your family and friends so they don't get caught up in this traffic.
